Does anyone make such a rim? I've got some KN minilites in 15" and they weigh a ton and I'd like the look of some 16" split rims with a bit lower side rubber.

And remember I've got the Hoyle front suspension and looking at the 4 link from Bilol Guzman for the rear

you talking about these?

I don't think those are knock-offs or split rims.

Niels, Hap Waldrop at Acme Speed Shop has been working with Superlite on a new style knock off alloy wheel which is quite a bit lighter than the traditional centered alloy knock off. The only sizes currently available are for the MGB in 14 and 15 inch rims, but I'd think that sending Hap a note might be worth the effort. They're not split rims, but might be something you can use. http://www.acmespeedshop.com/

The Performance Superlite web site lists a 16X7 spline drive cast wheel. http://www.superlitewheels.com/superlite_spline.asp

I think rota may make them - probably not split rims though.

Thanks Bill, I'll bookmark that page and give Hap a ring when I'm closer at completing my engine swap.

Tom - yov've got a link to the knock off ROTAs? Couldn't find them.

Why would you want split rims? I know out at the bodyshop they always talk of how dangerious they are.

Jun 20, 2008 22:59:49
Niels

Purely for that racey look - oh and they tend to be lighter than one piece wheels

Just don't try airing them up changing them when im around.

I think there is a misunderstanding about split rims here. I think Neils is talking about muilti-iece wheels, where the disc and rim can be unscrewed from each other, and the rim may also be constructed from 2 pieces, and assembled w/ an O-ring to seal. tires are mounted to these the same way they are mounted to single piece wheels.

In the US, a split rim refers to a multi-pieece wheel where a retaining ring is used to form one bead. these are used for stiff ply tires, and have fallen out of favor in light trucks due to several fatalities resulting from mis assembly

Greg that's what I had in mind. I'm sorry if I confused someone.

Had you considered using wire wheels?

A set of 6" Daytons would look nice on an MGB in 15".....

Maybe, I changed from brand new 60 spoke chrome wires with 165R14 to my current set up and it felt like night and day, som I'm a little worried about flex in wires.

Niels, I am running the same wheels used on AC Cobras - 15 x 6" 70 spoke (these have more offset out so you might be better with one of the Aston rims with more neutral offset) and I assure you they do not flex! I am running sticky Yoko 215 x 60-15s on them (too wide for an MGB) and get no detectable flex. Frankly, even using original TR-6 5 1/2" Dunlops you probably wouldn't get appreciable flex.

And IMHO the wires look much more period appropriate.

i went with unconventional 17x7 american eagle wheels and 205/40/17 tires and boy do they handle

I've had a replay from Superlite wheels

My question:

Hi

Just wondered if you do wheels for knock off hubs to fit MGBs? And if so how much a set of 4 16x7 classic superlites with knock off hubs would be?

Best regards
Niels Christian Nielsen

sorry no we don't

The knock-offs are going to be heavy no matter what you do. I'm sure the 16" wheels can be machined to accept the center hubs that Hap sells, for a price. I believe he orders in custom blanks once in a while to drill different bolt holes and such. I'm not sure if he can get a set of knock-off hubs and 16" blanks for you though. Its worth a try. Given all the tire options in 16" these days, it might be worth the effort. If you want them, I'd start working on it now rather than wait until you need them!!!

That is wisw words, luckily I've already got some 15" KN miniators that i can use until I find or get someone to make me a set of 16". I'll have to finish the car first.
Next purchase will be Bill Guzmans 4 link rear suspension set up :)

neils, was your reply from superlite wheels in oz or in the uk? they are 2 seperate firms with no connection. maybe try karen at superlite-UK if you have not. did you try michael barnes at MB racing wheels in the UK? i had him make a custom set of 7x10 3 peice alloy wheels for my mini and i would think getting your parts from the Uk would be more cost effective than from the states? there is also Kodiak racing wheels in Canada which also make custom 3 piece alloys to order.

Thanks James - i'll make note of the companies. My replay was from the UK company I guess as I sent it to karen@.......

Niels, the link to Performance Superlite I posted above is for the Australian company and it's their website that shows a 16" wheel with the Rudge spline center. I don't know about the offset though, might not fit the MGB. Their website has a "contact us" link that you can use to inquire. This is the company that is working with Hap, not the Superlite company in the UK!

Those really look great. Did you have to do any wheel well modifications to accomidate the wheels and tires?

I don't visit here much, but saw this thread and thought I would comment. Superlite USA, in which I am a distributor for and work with Pack Racing/ VTO Performance closely in R&D and marketing as well as being the person who displays the Superlite at shows/races. We have a CNC drilling machine which allows us to drill any wheel we make to any bolt pattern, also alows us to convert any wheel blank we offer into a spline drive/knock off wheels. Currently we just sold all of our recent shipment of spline adapters thru wheel sales, but will be getting a new shipment soon. We offer 16x7 Superlite that can be made into spline drive wheels. There ahs been some personal changes at Superlite AUS lately, the guy we worked with there most is now somewhere else, we had worked with him to make a better adapter made form a custom broach rather than a gear cutter, Superlite Australia continues to make thier adpaters with gear cutters, while we continued with broach manufacturing method, which is much more precise and fit the MG hubs better, so our broached adapters are a Superlite USA exclusive product. email me or give me a call if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help you any way I can. We invite custom applications, and even offer a test fit program.

Niels-

Saw something this evening and thought about you....

Guy named Phil Schmidt (PS Engineering, Torrance California, 310.534.4477) makes one and two piece wheels for vintage racing in the US. More to the point, he makes peg drive centerlock wheel adapters. From the potograph I'm looking at, it appears these bolt to the hub, and drive the wheel with the pegs through the stud holes.

May be worth a phone call if you're still looking for centerlocks
