I have a '74 Midget in the restoration process and needed a new ignition switch. It has the black plasitc style sold for 1975 and later. I read somewhere mid 74 they switched to that style and did not update parts books of the change. I purchased a new switch for 75-on and looks the same except the plug end is different and has one extra grey wire along with a red/white wire half the size of my original. I propose to desolder the new harness and install my old wires eliminating the grey wire. Does anyone know if this will work? Any ideas....
Thanks

The red white wire is usually small about a 14 gauge wire. Originally the red/white wire runs from the switch to the (Peaktron Box) on the passenger side behind the dash, from the box there is a Pink/yellow wire that runs to the starter relay. The grey wire I believe is for the seat belt buzzer/ key reminder (same buzzer) it is not needed. Yes it will work, you could also use your old plug and push the wires out of the old plug and order new bullet connectors. I remember doing something like this when I replaced the main harness on my 74 Midget.

BTW, I had to bypass the red/white wire at the Peaktron box to get power to the starter relay. Brand new harness! but the Pek box was shot..

Don't know if there are any plastic parts inside the new switch, but the heat from soldering could ruin them.

The switch is all plastic except for the contacts. Kinda rediculous looking to me but thats what I'm stuck with. I did solder the wires on and it works and tests good. the trick to soldering is use a very fine tip and a small heat sink closest to the switch but to too close to your work. The center brown power wire terminal on original switch was riveted and the new soldered. It all seems to have worked out and only cost me $70.00.

James, Im having the same issue with my 74 midget... when you say you bypassed the red/white wire with the pink /yellow, did you mean you fused the two wires together ?
