Never had so many issues with a new motor in my life. Problem #5 or 6 I believe. Ran motor for about 15 minutes to get up to temp. Been having what I believe are mixture issues (too rich) with the carb setup. (HS6's on a crossflow). Valves set, timing good at 15 degress. Running rough at all rpm (no power), plugs fouling, also noticed that the exhaust port manifold coming from the #1 cylinder does not heat up. After nearly 30 minutes running could grab it with my hand (90 degrees), I don't recommend this as a normal test procedure, the other 2 were running at 225 degrees.
So I've thrown in the towel and will be taking to a local shop ($95 an hour). I gotta be missing something or just don't want to believe the rebuild went bad.
Holding my breath, keep ya posted.

before giving up, try replacing the ignition wire for #1. swap it with #2 and see if the "effect" moves with it. ditto spark plug.
sounds like a dead plug or wire.
of course, a timing light can help identify that as well
can you run compression check?
I've moved the timing light through all the wires just to check the dist. All wires conducting. Replaced all the plugs, and moved around between cylinders. Compression was reading 160lbs across all 4 give or take a few lbs. The only thing I can think of is a sticky valve, maybe no fuel getting into that one cylinder, but the valve alignment is set correctly. Stick a fork in me.......
If all holes are firing, then there has to be combustion and thus heat.
if there is no heat, thus no combustion in that hole. there's no other option. it works or it does not.
this is the quandry you (we) are in.
you say compression is good in that hole. if so, then intake valve is working...at least with air.
I am wondering if it is getting gas...which isn't the same as air.
wild grasp...pull the air cleaners. I'm thinking a chance that the two holes on the outside side of the carbs (that mate to the air cleaners), the pair above the bolt holes, are blocked as an upside down gasket would do. that would restrict piston movement and pretty much turn off the fuel from that carb. this would also affect hole #2, but you couldn't fee the effects of no fuel in #2 because it is blended with 3. I don't know about HS6s but all SUs are pretty much the same, thus my suggestion.
there could also be the initial jet setting on the carbs. at least the jet position on front carb ought to be same as rear. needle loose? are butterflies opening evenly?
I realize you've gone thru "everything"--but something's not right, thus "everything" isn't right.<g>
before you reject my suggestions off hand, realize I am a thousand miles away and can only make suggestions based on my imagination not upon hands-on with you car.
Morning Mac, good call on the carb. I've been operating with the filters off though. I feel your on the right track though, fuel starvation to both those plugs. But whats fouling the plugs, oil! I took a couple days off from working on it to relieve the frustration and will address tonight. I noticed a rather large intake hiss from that carb (front). Will disassemble tonight and take a look, though I'm rather ignorant on the workings of carbs I should beable to figure whether fuel is flowing or not. Maybe I'll try spraying a little gas in while running and see if that effects it.
Appreciate your input Mac, always nice to have another's take on a problem.
Brian
