I have the edelbrock intake with the 390 on it. My engine is the 3.4
I think the Holly 4200 circle track series is a good carb for this engine.
Do a search here and you find lots to read.
Scott,
Edelbrock makes a manifold for this engine. It is actually two pieces. The base is their P/N 3785, and two tops, one for a 2 barrel carb and one for a 4 barrel carb. The 4 barrel version is #3789. I happen to have the 4 barrel top that I bought new and never used. In the box with the gasket. I can let you have it for half price if you want it. Just understand that it will require you to pop a hole in your hood as it is quite tall. Most add a scoop for it.

Thanks for the offer Mark, I think i might try the factory two barrel intake first and see what happens. I work in a machine shop and i think i can mill it out if i can find one. One of the guys says to get one out of newer 2.8 just before f.i. but iam not sure what year of vehicle to look for. Thanks again Mark and if anybody has a two barrel mani laying around that will fit my 1988 2.8 please let me know. Scott
Here are the two parts you require, the Edelbrock bottom and CCE's special top.
The special top I believe allows sufficient hood clearance.
These pics are the bottom only, see next post and my journal.
Scott,
I have a few manifolds types for sale here:

Just posted this portion of our site in the MGE-Trader yesterday.

Another way of testing is simply a tire pressure gauge taped to a high point and set the sheet metal down slow. When closed, you'll know how much room you have left.

I used a real cheap trick PLAY DOUGH!! Borrowed some from the kids next door. Worked great!!

Or strategically placed modeling clay. Yep, it's kinda close.
