Shifting from 3rd to 4th gear (72 non o/d) there is a subtle but noticable grind. If double clutch, or engage clutch for 1.5 secs longer it is not there. Usual or is the tranny about to go?

start lookin for a good used tranny

Lookds like the syncronizers are giving up. Good used 4-speeds are cheaper than overhauling. There are quite a few of them around.

Bet you have to yank the engine for the swap, eh? I just don't think me and this little car were meant to be!

By the by -- how long do you think she has before tanking on me?

you don't HAVE to pull the engine, how to article here <http://www.shadetreemg.com/new_page_1.htm> but it ain't much more trouble. B engines are easy to get out. As for how long will it last? depends on how much you drive it and how much grinding you are willing to put up with

PHil,
Come get one of the two trannies you gave me. You know their condition better than I do. I beleive you told me, "Pulling an engine is a piece of cake"
Don't give up on the car yet, you are getting it done, and when your finished you are going the have a completely rebuilt 72.
All your talking about now is just a little more labor and no cost.

Ed

Call me if you want the tranny.

Pull the tranny. Throw it away. Find an O/D trans. Install. Rejoice at new found cruising comfort!

It may do that for years before it gives up.

Phil,
If you do decide to have it rebuilt check with George at Classic Restorations. He rebuilt my O/D and tranny. Even my boss (aka wife) was surprised at the bill.

Classic Restorations - 972-429-6079. He imports OD's and OD mainshfts plus all related parts, and can turn a non-OD box into OD. SWEET!!

BTW - What is the average cost of rebuilding a tranny?

Don't mess with rebuilding a 4-speed MG tranny...there are lots out there...I've got more than a dozen & they're all good & only $150 plus shipping....you can find them anywhere for that or less

Phil,
Call George. He and Bert do a good job rebuilding and it'll come in less than a used one (with shipping).

You would be surprised. Shipping across the US is only $85, Oregon to Maine.

I can UPS them for $57! If they can completely rebuild for less than $200, I've got a few I'd like built!

My trannies are cheaper though! :)

The bearing, and synco kit alone is $160, and that's in the box. Never mind what a gear or shifter fork would cost, if you can find them. Forget a new fork for reverce.
