That's a whale of a machine and I haven't seen one in that condition in 20 years. Nobody builds cast iron and steel chunks like that anymore.

I learned how to drive on a Case a little bigger than this.

Really well preserved machine. If it's like most Case stuff, it should last another 25 years with care. Cummins built a 444 diesel engine in the 80's, not one of their better efforts. I'm assuming that the Case isn't Cummins powered? ;~)

I have 2 220's. A 1983 Case and a 1987 Ingersoll (after Case sold out) You cannot wear out these old Case tractors. The cast iron Kohler engines can be rebuilt several times, just had both of mine bored out .020. Took me a while to find a machine shop that would take the time to fart with a single cylinder engine, but now he has all my business. It does take a bit to get used to the hydraulic drive and the left discharge deck. What size is your mower? 44? The 220s have 38 inch decks on them.

Here is the 83 220. I gave $125 for this, the engine would hardly run, had a burnt exhaust valve and the rings were shot. Bored it out, new valve, piston, rings and rod - About $200 and it runs like new

If the engine is running good and not burning excess oil don't mess with it, it's nearly bullet proof.

John's right. If it has good compression and doesn't smoke and doesn't rattle due to a worn bore, then you are good to go. Those old Kohler cast iron engines will last forever if you keep the oil clean and the carbon out of the combustion chamber. I'd pull the head and clean the carbon so it doesn't damage the piston. Use straight 30W oil in it and change it often. Also if the hydraulic oil has never been changed, might be a good idea to change that. 15w40 rotella in the hydraulic res.

You can get parts manuals and owners manuals at http://www.ingersolltractors.com/
there is also a case/ingersoll yahoo group that would be good to browse.
