MGB 79.Anybody out there found a 5 sp (w/ w/o o/d 5th) that fits reasonably well into a 'B'

I've heard of both datsun and toyota 5 speeds being swapped in with little problem. Talk to some of those spridget guys, they are more into tranny swapping than the avg. B owner.

I will shortly be doing a 280 ZX 5-speed into my GT. Will keep you posted. This is going to be slow in that I am working on restoring my Roadster at present.

To my knowledge there is no easy conversion for an MGB. The Spridget conversion is easier because there are several conversion kits made for the Datsun and Toyota conversion. The OD B tranny is a good almost bullet proof tranny, and it is made for the car. I wouldn't go to all the hassel of a conversion when all you have to do is put the OD in to get the same results.

I think this link came from here - http://www.waterloo-dtr.com
They make a 5 speed for MGB and MGA for around $1850. Specialize in drive trains - custom rear ends, drive shafts, etc. I don't have any experience with them, but would be interested if some else on list does. They are located in Austin, Texas.

Thanks guys.As o/d trans seem to be in short supply I was considering a'C'rear end (higher ratio), dividing it up into smaller 'pieces' with a 5 speed.I guess the o/d trans is the way to go if you can find a working one.

i have a Victoria British winter sale catalog, ( 1-800-255-0088 )and they have OD trans on sale.. ( REMANUFACTRED)

the catalog number is WS.18.. and these prices are good till 29 FEB 2000

2-1034-R 65-67 999.99
2-1035-R 68-71 799.99
2-1061-R 72-80 799.99

according to the catalog, this does not include core charges and freight...

and if you do not have it.. i would call them and ask for it, as they have some killer prices i think right now.. i know i am going to call them just before i leave SAN DIEGO for some new parts.. :o)

I have a 65 but modified to 68 tranny. Heard that the newer O/D is best (one with the switch in the gearshift). Is that right?

Thanks
Don

Bill Guzman, Bggtv6@aol.com in Camarillo, CA was advertising a couple of months ago that he was importing used or rebuilt od trannies from England. I don't recall the prices. The only experience i have with the man is selling him parts, and his check didn't bounce. He seemed like a nice guy through our e-mails also.

This was supposed to be here under this thread...

This sale looks great, but I thought that the price was for the overdrive unit itself, and you\'d have to tack on an extra 1000 bucks for a whole unit. Does anyone know any more info about the units from VB????

Waterloo as mentioned above also lists rebuilt o/d and non-o/d transmissions on their web page. Looks interesting to me. Check it out!

Call Glen Towery at 302-734-1243. He uses a Datsun 5-speed and has everything ready to go, clutch, starter, adaptor plate, driveshaft. He says it's a bolt-in kit. He told me $1100 including a used tranny.
