After doing some research the last MG (probably a MGA)that raced in NASCAR was driven by Smokey Cook,a native of Winston-Salem N.C.who raced at Bowman-Gray Stadium on a quarter mile track.He started 18th and finished 17th after completing 12 laps and withdrew due to overheating issues.The car was # 32 and he made $75 for his efforts.The race was on August 16,1963 and the winner was Junior Johnson who led all 200 laps ( 50 miles ) at an average speed of 46.32 m.p.h.-he brought home $580.Smokey drove only one other race in 1960 in a MG-TD ( I think). The race lasted only 1 hour and 4 minutes. I would love to see a photo of his car.

This was discussed here a copule of years ago, when Toyota started in Nascar cup racing, Mike Joy, Foxs sport Nascar ammounce and alo so MG nut like us post here a good bit, and wanted some info on the last import car to race Nascar and it was Smokey in a MG at Bowman Grey, look back in this forum about two years ago, around Feb. and you should find it, and I believe a picture of the car was posted as well.

We've never found a photo of that car.

Cook was a modified regular at the stadium. While it is believed that #32 raced there in the hobby stock class, drivers needed to have at least a modified license to run in the Grand National race... thats why Cook was in the car that day.

Cook's is believed to be the same car raced in 1962's International 200 by Robert Berrier. Berrier finished in the top 15... the last import car to do so until Brian Vickers with Toyota recently.

We did find this photo of Fred Harb driving Sonny Blair's MG in an earlier Intl 200:

..and the roll bar mounted to the running boards, which are mounted to some structurally questionable ears off the side of the frame. You know, if we're going there... winking smiley

I just loved the luggage rack because it's the most out of place item on the car, at least while on a race track. Maybe he had to get home in a hurry after the race, so he left it there to carry his luggage on? grinning smiley

Neat picture, Jim Reed in car #7 in the above picture was friend of my father and used to come visit us at the family business when I was much younger, he was pretty sucessful driver in his time. Other early Nascar drivers that my dad was buddys with and that used to come visit us was Buck Baker, Joe Ubanks (he was our ZEP chemical rep) and Tim Flock, all these guys won their fair share of Nascar stock races in their day.

I at first thought it was a small block Chevy, but a second, closer look makes me wonder if it isn't Buick. Still the rocker covers look much like Chevrolet

Rick

You might be a racer if;
You consider the redline as a "conservative suggestion" and the rev limiter a "fun limiter".

Curtis,

Sonny Blair told me he blew up the MG engine and went to the junkyard for a replacement. He learned that it would cost many hundreds of $$$ to rebuild it.

However, the junkyard owner was a race fan, so he offered Blair a small block Chevy V8 and its Powerglide trans for $150. Thats what you see in the photo.

Mike

Small block Chevy's were a fairly popular conversion back in the late 50s and early 60s, so much so that Popular Mechanics magazine ran an article on how to do it to a MG TD. As I remember, the only noticeable change was a small blister on the left engine side panel. I believe to clear the generator. I can't remember anything else. Too many years ago. PJ
