MGB: 67 gt rebuild

The introduction... I have been playing with my B for the past 11 years, it has been an on and off, mostly off kind of thing. About a month ago I made the decision to get it done, and right! This is my third attempt at the body and I think I have the knowledge and experience to do the right job. The engine has already been rebuilt, pistons, rings, bearings, timing belt, gaskets, and a weber outlaw 38/38 slapped on top.
What I am looking for is some opinions and advice to achieve my objective, a sweet looking and riding B.
I have attached a few shots of the work.

Car looks really good. First suggestion? Ditch the Weber and get some real carbs. :bouncing:

Seriously, you've put a LOT of work into it. You're about 4 years ahead of me, as it happens. Reading the posts from folks who've been where you are makes me think your time-line is pretty darn normal.

Welcome to the forum Edward!
Looks as if your ability to get it done is certainly on the right track!
I have nothing to add except.....dont rush the process. You've come a long way already and have winter down time ahead. I'm sure you'll be on the road in the Spring! The assembly process takes alot of patience.
You'll find support and answers to you questions here, thats for sure.
Nice work!

Thank you for all of the encouragement, if and when I ever do a frame off restore again I will definitely send the body and all panels and doors to a blaster, this process is taking FOREVER!!! I will definitely keep the posts coming, this weekend I should have the entire car grinded out and etched, all I have to do is the undercarriage from the trany well back.

Swamper,
She is a LHD, but all I would have to do to switch it up is change the steering coulomb, thinking about it?

OK now I am intrigued... what carb would you put on it?

You'd need to get a uk spec dash as well, right? I like the quirky idea of rhd, but for a car I'm going to drive a lot I'll stick with lhd. Anyway, looks like a great project. If I had one, only one, mgb model to choose, it would be a '67 gt in original condition. Love it.

The original dual HS4s are darn fine carbs. Easy to work on, and once they're in tune they'll stay that way pretty much forever. (I'm fond of the HIFs on my '73, but they aren't as easy to do routine maintenance on....)

It looks like you're doing a great job on the car. Zippier performance from the dual carbs would be a sweet reward - not that you'll be disappointed with what you've got, by the way. If, sometime down the road - pun intended - you decide to switch out you'll be pleasantly surprised. In the meantime it sounds like you're doing everything right.

Question,
What do you guys think of the "Sebring rear valance" ? I was either thinking of using the prefab product or fabricating one out of sheet metal?

Hi Ed, I too have a 67 gt. I will be putting in a full syncro overdrive trans. from a later MG and will replace the generator with an alternator. I also agree with the others about the SU carbs.. I am also curious about relays or other electrical tweaks I have seen mentioned on this site. If I could have brighter lights and a decent sound system without problems I would like to know how............ Anyone ?

At least you have the best year GT out there :)
What did you strip under the hood with? It looks great.

Looking good. I, myself, am on the third attempt to get my V8 built. The first attempt started in 1991 . Keep chipping away at it!

Disney,
I used paint and varnish stripper to start, they make a spray-on type that is great, it comes in 1 gal containers and you just pour some into a squirt bottle and go to work. The product takes about 15 minutes to do its thing, then scrape, scrape, scrape away... then do it again, and sometimes again. To finish the job I used a heavy duty wire wheel on a grinder to get most of the job done, a smaller one on a drill and for the very hard to reach spots a hand held media blaster. When grinding I highly recommend using ear plugs!!!
