I have the car on her side and am ready to begin repair and fabrication...
1. I want to paint the rails under the rockers, but want some opinions on what to do with the rest of the car. Should i paint the underside of the car or use undercoat?

2. I want to install fender flares, should i just fabricate them from scratch or use something from an existing car? If so what car part will work?

Thanks for the help.

1. A lot of folks have had good luck with spray-on or brush-on truck bed liner. Most of them can be color-tinted to a close match with your paint.
2. Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon fenders make good flare donors. There are also fiberglass flares available from Morspeed and others. Suggest you search on the V8 section of this Forum for examples.

x2 on the paint as per John.
NOTHING looks better or feels better than custom made steel flares IMHO...

Jack,
I like the colored undercoat idea, but you think I should definitely undercoat? Also, thanks for the tip, I did a little looking around and that seems to be the match for the flares, it looks like they are going to cost me about $60 each.

Kirk,
Are you saying to use the Omni fender or custom fabricate the flares from scratch? I am a pretty good metal fabricator but do you think it will be more work than it's worth?

I am only suggesting meat is better than plastic or rags and glue. In the end you are the one who must weigh time and materials of quality vs ease. I have real metal on my auto crosser and there is no mistakeing the quality. I however bought it that way as I have little if any metal abilities....pretty good with wrenches tho!

I recommend Waxoyl to my customers...it comes with a nice kit to spray internally to the rockers etc. The problem with any undercoat is IF it chips or is nicked it acts as a nest to breed rust. Dad used roofing tar on his new VW in 1964. But if you keep it clean and reasonably hard road driven I don't think its a big issue. I don't know where you live but I'd suggest except for salt air, it might be avoided given the car can always be placed to dry completely. The colored paint I thought was for use on the lower rockers to prevent nicks and such.
