MGB: '67 on the road after 20 year hiatus

But it only got one trip to the DMV and back.

I've been redirected to the CHP because the DMV inspector can't verify the model year from the VIN. I showed her the chart in Clausager's that says it was built in '66, but there's no *model year* info for Mk1 cars. Explanations about the date of first registration determining the model year had no effect. An attempt to show her the year specific features that could lead one to be convinced the car is a '67 were met with an understandable explanation that she has 19 drivers tests to give and she just couldn't spend the time going through the book with me.
She told me while she doesn't have the authority to just call it a '67, the CHP does, and likely will do just that.

But, the CHP requires an appointment for vehicle verification, and so far the earliest I can arrange within "test drive" range is 4 weeks away. I'm waiting for a call back from another CHP office that may have an earlier slot open.

:( Bummer :(

No temporary operating permit without the vehicle verification, so the car is garaged until I get another "one day moving permit" to take it to the CHP.

But on the plus side, the car ran great :) and there are still plenty of details that need attention before I'd really start using the car anyway.

If you're in the LA area, I can point you to a CHP office where I just showed up and got an inspection done in ten minutes.

How did a '67 get Rostyles? Ok retro fitted but you know what I mean.

Good on you for getting it back into life.

Paul ;-)

The original Mark I steel wheels were probably damaged, and since they're hard to find someone probably just used rostyles. Either that or the wire wheels were worn out and it was cheaper to just grab some Mark II steel wheel parts to replace the wire wheel setup with.

The original owner received the car as a graduation gift from his Mom and drove it "all over the place" for several years, collecting enough dents and dings to have it fixed up and painted once. Then he drove it for more years until enough new dents and mechanical problems caused him to park it in his carport in 1987.

He moved and rented the house out and the car stayed in the carport until I bought it from him in 2005. I had it flat bedded to my house and spent all of my spare time since then taking every nut, bolt, and rivet apart, replacing some body panels, scraping, welding, grinding, sanding, painting, rebuilding, and reassembling.

If you count my time as money, then it was a very bad move. But not spending my time on it wouldn't have put any more money in my bank account, so this is the only way I could manage a mk1 driver.

The original wire wheels were pretty worn out and my attempts to adjust the loose spokes just broke spokes. This was a budget project, and I swapped the wire wheel axle for a bolt on axle, and bought 5 rostyles for $40. A bit of cleaning and painting made them good enough for a while.

I thought I'd be able to just drop by a CHP office, but that didn't work. All of the local offices here (SF north bay) require appointments and seem to have only one guy per office that does the verifications.
