A friend of mine is rebuilding my '68 MGB gearbox and all problems have been solved but the pitting on the end of the
mainshaft(where it rides inside a bearing). I have checked several places and only one offered to repair it but the price tag
was $600 plus! What now? Does anyone have a line on a good used one? I thought about buying a used gearbox but what
are the odds that the mainshaft will be any better than this one?

Clifford, are you speaking of a 3 or 4 synchro gearbox? If it is the 4, I have what you are looking for. Let me know.

If you were closer to me I'd say come and get one of the 5 or so gearboxes I have around (heck I'm thinking about tossing 2 of them with the scrap that I'm taking in next week)

Hi,
Thanks for responding. It is a 4 synchro gearbox.

How bad is the pitting? sometimes can be cleaned up with emery cloth...if you are only driving a couple of thousand miles a year it should be okay if the pitting isn't too bad..

you could also have it spray welded and machined...

This is the same problem I had with the trans in my '68 GT. The pitting was pretty bad, and was making noise. I swapped all the guts from a newer and very pristine trans into the '68 case. I think these transmissions are finally getting old enough that the weak areas are starting to emerge, and I'd encourage people to start hanging onto them. The option of repairing the nose on these shafts is sounding like it will be a reasonable option, unless the later mainshaft noses are hold up better than the early ones. Time will tell.

The non OD transmissions are a dime a dozen You should be able to pick up a low milage one for under $100. RAY
