Hello

Can anyone give me an idea what you'd do in a rebuild of the motor?
Everything appears stock- except the emissions control stuff has been taken off.

I have a gem of a mechanic- retired but keeps busy that works for $35 an hour.
What parts/proceedures should be done to get it to quality daily driver status-not show quality;)? How many hours would it take a talented yet deliberate mechanic? He is good but no speed demon. How much for parts?

Can someone thumbnail it for me?

Thanks,

Steve

Yep. If your mechanic knows his way around a wrench, that'll get him where you both want to go. Just for grins, you might throw a spare Haynes manual his way.

Depends on what you want to end up with.

You could do a "refresh" (rod bearings rings and some reasonable valve work) for a couple of hundred bucks plus five hundred or so for his labor plus something for the machine shop. On the other hand you could spend ten grand and end up with a Swiss watch hot rod.

I suggest that you buy some books (you should have them if you own an MG anyway) and do some leg work yourself to get a feeling for what is possible and discuss the different issues with your technician. The danger is going overboard like a kid in a candy store, but the saving grace is that more power costs more bucks and your wallet will be your limiter.

The Bentley service manual. The one with the green cover is the appropriate one for your MG.

All are available on Amazon.

Order both the Moss and Victoria British parts catalogs so you will have some sort of reference as to the parts costs.

Planning is THE most important part of any engine work.
