Loosen up the fitting on the linkage and pull the cable out down at the pedal. Then, decide if you want to reuse your old housing or not. If so, just push the new cable through from the pedal through the sheathing/housing, pull it tight through the linkage, and then tighten everything back up. If you want to use your new housing, then just pull it out of the alumium "pedestal" on the firewall, put the new one on in its place, then thread your new cable through. Make sure to lube everything up somehow.
And you can use a rear brake cable for a bicycle. Just thread it through the old housing. Good to carry a spare cable in the trunk.
How about lubing the cable up with white lithium grease? The cable is probably okay. I buggered up the housing working on the rust so I decided to replace the whole thing, being an old bike man, that was the answer I expected.
You can also use a high-end bicycle cable housing in place of the original. Many of them have a teflon sheath inside that never require lubrication. Its a great upgrade for less than $10. Just remove your throttle cable assembly and bring it into a bike shop. They can cut the cable and housing for you with a (very) expensive cutter to make the job even easier! There are several brands of cables that should last a lifetime including Shimano, Quality, JagWire, etc...
Hey all. I came across this thread while I was searching for ways to fix my cable woes and decided to try out this solution, but I've run into some problems.
So you know, it's a '77 B and I have a Weber carb on it with a linkage that brings the cable up from the bottom. Because of that, when the cable comes through the firewall it creates an 'S' shape so that it can properly be fed through the linkage. Here's my issue:
The casing I picked up from my local bike store doesn't have the metal end to keep it from going through the firewall that the casing I got from Moss did. So instead of the new bike casing stopping at the firewall, it goes all the way down to where the cable hooks onto the pedal. How did you guys get by that, or is that not a problem on the earlier model B?
Hope this makes sense. If any clarification is needed I'll do my best.
John
