How do I take this off? There is a small circular opening in the shaft of the plastic knob. It is corroded so it's hard to tell if it is a small screw or a type of push button release, ??? Or should this thing just pull off. Certainly don't want to break it.

It is a push and pull. It has a small push ball in the opening on the knob. Then you unscrew the base, to remove it from the dash. If rusted I would use some sort of a "liquid wrench" penetrating oil to help loosen it up.
