73B wouldn't start, OK now.

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1973 which was running great when I got it. Now, when I turn it on the engine idles roughly and dies after about 30 seconds or so. I checked the fuel filter, there's a visible amount of fuel in it. I checked the ignition and all 4 cylinders appear to be receiving good, timely spark. My next thought was to check the carbs. I took off the air filters and started the car. I can hear the suction and the car responds very well with gas. However, when I lift off the pedal, the engine idles rough again and then dies. The car returns to 850 RPM before then dropping steadily until stalling. Does anyone have an idea as to what is wrong? I'm new to these cars and have little experience with carburetter engines. Just realized I never posted the final outcome to my problem. After pulling the carbs, cleaning them out with carb cleaner (they looked good) and changing the fuel filter, it still would not start. I checked for spark with an in-line tester (had spark) but never actually pulled the plugs out. On a whim and advise from another B owner I changed the plugs. That baby fired right up and idles at 900 rpm, drives fine. What a relief. I have only had the car for 2 months and I'm having fun figuring things out as I go along. Thanks for everyones help on this and for that expected in future.
