I mistakenly bought a matched key set for the hatchback( gt) and doors - but forgot to get the one that includes the glove box. (DOH!) Being able to lock the glovebox is pretty superfluous to me - is there a way to remove the lock mechanism or use a different model glove box door in the 74?
Thanks - the sage folks here always have answers.

You could very likely have the current lock on the GB door re-keyed to work with your new keys by a good locksmith. I'd drive the car to the locksmith shop (if it's driveable) or take the GB door (with the lock in it of course) to a locksmith shop if it's not driveable and have it done there to avoid a trip charge for coming to you. If you can't find a locksmith who can do it, do a search on this site for locksmiths that deals with British keys and locks. I've also got a couple of phone numbers from a couple of British car locksmiths that I accquired at a British car show. One is a guy named Pete Groh and his number is 410-750-2352. The other is a fellow named Steve Sandlin and his number is 936-435-1324. Let us know what happens because I suspect others on this site have the same problem or a similar one. Good luck!

I love how things devolve here so quickly. Thanks for the advice, even Limey's leaving it unlocked. I am in no rush, so i may pull the gb door and take it to locksmith - because I guess i really need to keep my gloves protected.
Do all the Gb doors have locks?
Best - enjoy your weekend. Brandon

That's because, like all real men, you don't wear them! ;)
Yes, I think they all have locks - my '64 and '70 in England did, so do the '71 (with '73 dash) and '74 here and I think the newer ones have a lock too!
My 74 glove box lock has a two sided tumbler, the doors and boot use single sided tumblers. I believe a locksmith would have to use a different cylinder to made the other keys, unless my car is odd-ball.
Clifton
Clifton may be right. I've never heard much about this subject so I don't know what's interchangable with what. I think, however, that the original glove box, door locks, and trunk lid/hatch locks all used the same key from the factory so these locks should be keyable to each other since they use the same key. Hey, I ain't no locksmith so don't hold me too accountable for this information. Just trying to help! :D
