I had my starter go out on my 74 B. So I ordered a rebuilt starter online. The starter worked about three or four days before that one went out. I took that one out and bench tested it and found that one was faulty too. (everything else on the car checked out good) Seeing that it's a pain to reorder and how long it would take to receive it. I decided to buy from my local discount store. I gave NAPA my worldwide part number plus year make and model of the car. They didn't have it in stock and ordered it for the next day. When I went to pick it up it was wrong. The part number crosses Toyota. Since NAPA couldn't get one I called Advance Auto They could get me a Bosh reman but only with a 30 day warranty. The price was high and I figure no way because of the warranty only being 30 days. So next I went to Carquest. My part numbers crossed and in the picture looked the same as a Lucus 2M100. So my friends ordered the starter. Today I got it and tried to put it on. It looked the same till trying to install. I couldn't get it to line up. The bolts would start but the starter was cocked. After taking it out I found out that the case was bigger then my Lucus and was hitting the casting where the dip stick tube went into the block. So back to the store and reorder another.

What I was wondering if anyone has replaced their starter with an manufacture starter from one of the discount stores and if they have the part number.

Might help to straighten out this mess.

At this point (having been skunked on local purchase) I think I'd go with one of the specialists.

OR take your bad one in to a local automotive electric place and have them rebuild it. Such places are in nearly every community, although perhaps not in Mayberry<G>) and their stock in trade is repairing and rebuilding automotive electrical systems, starters, alternators, generators, and such.

John,

You're getting bad information about Bosch starters. All Bosch remanufactured starters come with a 2-year warranty plus a roadside assistance warranty in case the starter ever lets you down. And those warranties come directly from Bosch, not from the parts store or chain where you get it. Correct part number for late model MGBs is SR193X. More info at www.Boschautoparts.com

Full disclosure: my company handles all publicity for Bosch replacement parts in North America.

I don't want to change your religion or anything, but you might consider one of the hi-torque starters like VB or Moss offers. They are lighter, smaller and work well.

When I bought mine in 2003 from VB, I found one $100. cheaper from Moss. :(

These people remanufacture Lucas starters.

Can't attest to how well, and I don't know about pricing.

My local rebuilder took one look and said " good luck finding parts for that thing! ". I never received a wrong one, but also found local discount store either couldn't get one or were back ordered. Did get one from O'Reileys and it worked, but casing is definately not Lucas or Bosch. Some strange rebuild.

I just went through the gear reduction starter thing and posted a thread about the distasteful experience a week or so ago.

I ended up having my local starter rebuild guru going through the original Lucas unit and it works just like a new one would. Getting parts is no problem at all.

Some folks have had positive experiences with the little gear reduction units but it will be a long time before I try one again.

Jack -
I did a search and found your topic from about 9 days ago.

Holey Cow! You certainly did have some bad luck!

I have had mine almost 9 years now. I do recall early on, one of the bolts backed out. I got a galvanized bolt from the local ships chandelry when I was in Seward. The zinc coating on the bolt gave it enough friction to keep it in place.

Hasn't moved since.

Was that Seward AK?

All the parts are available to rebuild a Lucas starter, as Jack attests. If you can actually find someone locally, who knows what they're talking about, you should be back on the road in no time at all. RAY

I haven't had to replace the starter, but I will second O'Reilly as a great source for parts. They can often get me parts that nobody else can and in only a day or two.
