Hi everyone,
I am a new member to this forum, and a new owner of a 79 MGB roadster convertible. The B is in great shape except for a grounded cooling fan that drew my battery down until I spotted it. Removed the old one for now and it now charges 14+ volts. I ordered a new one and it should be here soon. I noticed on the Weber sidedraft 45DCOE carb there is no breather. Do they make one to fit it and if so, do you need to remove the air horns, and lastly does it change the performance? I did see somewhere where someone had added a couple round small ones on each air horn. Does anyone know a source. Enough questions for the first post anyway. Thanks for any help you might provide me.

I can see how this car can become a passion or habit or both

Regards,
Ken

You'll need to remove the velocity stacks unless they're the really short ones. If they're short enough you can leave them inside the air filter. Without a photo, I'm just guessing that your's won't work, since I doubt they're the stubbies - and you can't use a deep filter housing due to the proximity of the brake master cylinder.

You can use a K&N (pricey) or an EMPI (cheap). Here's the EMPI on my car (about $18 or so - easily found wherever aftermarket parts for VW Beetles are sold).

Joe,
Thanks for the info. I just wondered why they were installed without an air filter on them. I have seen others this way and thought that debris would foul them if no breather was installed.

Some folks install them on street engines just because it looks "racy". Kinda like big wings on the back of a Civic....

Open air horns make a wonderful sound but will kill your engine quickly. Take Joe's advice on the Empi filters. They are MUCH less expensive than K&Ns and in my experience are of better quality. Here's a link

I use these on my BGT with twin webers. Hopefully the picture is attached!

I really like the looks of these. Do you have a source for them? I think there is room to install these without removing the stacks also. Is there an element in them? Thanks.

Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy Calif. has them. The mesh is 3 layer. These are popular with the vintage race crowd. there is a groove on the inside that fits the end of the airhorn for a firm mounting.

Tou can get foam "Socks" that fit over the trumpets. They come as individuals or dualsthat cover both trumpets. They are oiled to trap dust.
