I put an alternator on my '66 when I re-did the motor.

If the large brown and small brown/yellow wires are disconnected from the alternator… no squeal.

If the wires are connected… squeals like crazy!

And ideas?

Thanks

Belts loose. With the alternator connected up to the battery its now charging and will require more force to turn the alternator hence the squeal. You should shoot for about a half inch deflection when the belt is pushed by hand.

Is the alternator internally regulated? Have you converted the car to negative ground?

Like Stewart said, the more electrical load you place on your alternator, the harder it is to turn. This because of the increase in magnetic field, which causes more turning resistance (that's why you notice a decrease in RPM when you turn on the blower or lights, etc.).
Also, Kimberly I wonder, are you thinking that the alternator is kicking out max amps because the output is going to ground?

Thanks for the quick responses.

The alternator is a Lucas unit that was part of the Moss gen-to-alt conversion kit. The car has been converted to neg ground.

Stewart,
Are you saying the belt might be too loose, or that the belt should be looser? When I push down on the top of the belt between the water pump and alternator I get some deflection, but I haven't measured it.

Again, thanlks for the ideas.

I had a squealing belt once because the belt was too narrow, it didn't grip enough on the pulley. Switched to a wider belt and no more squeal.

It's loose. From the book 1/2" movement at midway of longest run. You might have to reset it after a while as the belt will stretch slightly.

Thanks All

BTW Stewart: The titanium B is a great looking car.
