Not to start a "Whole Language" vs "Phonics" debate (both have their place), but this is an excellent example of how the mind reads using word recognition or "Whole Language".

As long as the first and last letters are in the correct place, and all the letter are there, the mind recognizes the word withour sounding it out. Of course, we have to know the words to do it!

Pretty cool...

The thing that impresssed me was that I could read it almost as fast as when the letters are arranged correctly.

It's the reason why road signs (at least here in England) are written in lower case. You can read them fast and not use up too much concentration fathoming out where to go/what is up ahead.
Also why lower case needs to be used when writing out records/instructions, it's just easier to read and not get wrong.
It's also a way of helping people who have learning difficulties cope with the world around them.

Interesting, Billy, never thought of that. Didn't know lower case was used like that in the UK.
