The car starts on the choke but will not run when choke is released. Looks as though it may be a float level problem but I would really appreciate input from someone with experience with these carbs.

Jim, you just missed a good thread from a few days ago. Check this link:

And inside that link is this link to excellent, step-by-step tuning:
Weber Tuning Procedures
Check the Pierce Manifolds website (also linked in that thread) for diagrams and advice on setting float height. Others have used the measurement rather than the gauge they sell and find a feeler gauge (or combination) that gives the proper gap between the little ball and the metal piece that moves it.
If you have further questions, post 'em as specifically as you can. Good tinkering!
Dave
Sorry I can't remember the web address but there are a few excellent Weber set up and troubleshooting sites or articles online. Try googleing Weber Set Up.
Yup, just like David just said...but he delivered the goods.
the carb came with a set up sheet. Basically all you do is adjust the idle control valve according to the sheet. Nothing else to adjust or fiddle with.
You should be able to find a copy of the set up sheet on line by looking.
Check your fuel pressure too. The DGV runs best with about 3 PSI.
Jim, did you just install this carb, or is it something that has been on your car for some time? RAY
Ray- The p.o. installed and it never did run correctly. Relatively new. It's a Pierce set-up. Gas pools in the manifold below the carb.
In that case, contact Pierce. They should be able to help you. Their website will give phone number ans such.
I would have to agree with the float issue, however, I would suggest you look at the idle speed screw. With the choke off, does the carb just close up? Get your idle up around 900 when the engine is hot.
Jon- I did set up the idle screw on the bell crank so that the top butterflies are open when the choke is released. It immediately sputters and gasps when the choke is released and will not take any throttle. Then it dies.
Jim:
Your problem sounds very similar to the one I'm having with my Weber DGV carb(79 B). I just put a kit in the carb. It will only idle soothly. If I move the throttle, it starts coughing and sputtering until it quits. Keep an eye on the discussion in my thread too. Maybe the two of us can help each other out. I'm about down to the point where I am going to remove the carb and recheck everything, including all of the jet sizes, plus recheck the float. If I don't find anything obvious, I'm out of ideas.

Wayne- Thanks for the posting. I am going to spend a few more days trying to sort it out. The carb does not need a rebuild, it has virtually no miles on it, but I am concerned about the fuel pooling in the manifold. The accelerator pump should supply the necessary fuel when the throttle is applied but either too much or too little is being delivered. I'll keep you posted.
