I should know this... and I can't tell from the catalog...was the '69 ash tray krinkle black or smooth semigloss black? Just finishing up some of the cockpit detail parts.

Really Chris? I thought they were Satin or a wee bit more glossy?
Well, as soon as I posted I was wondering also. There are three gloss ones here, but the ashtray on a friend's B back in the early 70's (which was as stock as God made them) was crinkle. It made quite an impression on me for reasons that we will not explore on this forum.
I'll back out of this one.
I won't ask Chris...lol.
Guess I'll have to buy some wrinkle paint, I'm spending so much lately what difference would that make?
I'm with you. My accountant told me I'm not making any money with the business. Then said "But you're having fun, right?".
Make that *three* for crinkle...... I have an totally stock origninal ashtray in my '71 B and it is crinkle....... Remember... over time the high ridges on a crinkle finish will wear down. Making it "look" like a mat or satin type of finish...... (just look at an un-restored dash on a pre-68 B or Midget....

If I might hijaak for a related question...
Is the ashtray installed centered at the top of the transmission tunnel? Several shots in Clausagers make it look like the ash tray is actually shifted off to one side a bit. (Or is that just a perspective of the photo?) I suppose from an ergonomics point of view it would make sense to not have to reach around the shifter to ash...
Hello, i have a 1970 mgb i have owned since 1973. i has a smooth black finished ash tray in it. The replacement ash tray came in the crinkle finish, but the original was smooth gloss black. mike
I believe the ashtrays were mounted off center. Just forward and to the right of the stick. Possible so as not to interfere with access to the center console switches. Just a guess though!
GeeMoo, check John Moore's journal. There are - I think - 2 screw holes he found from under the tunnel when he was doing his carpet. It was offset to the left, I believe.

Thanks Tom and Brian.
Found a couple of thread's of John's and some pictures that illustrate the offset towards the passenger side.
Will do the archeological dig through the nasty asbesto-foil and look for pre-existing holes.
