Then:
Atlas Shrugged or V For Vendetta anyone?
I know the site is pretty conservative, but I really don't think even MSNBC could make that sound appealing. How could any American support forcing TV and Radio stations to broadcast what the Government wants like this?
I just never thought something like this could happen in America. Maybe in China, but not here in the USA.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senators Richard Durbin, John Kerry and Jeff Bingaman all support it, which is just unbelievable to me.
Here's some more information on it:

What do you guys think of it?

I heard on the news that the religous broadcasters said that they would boadcast what the Bible dictates--the Gospel--regardless of the laws imposed on them. I find it amazing that those that want fairness and tolerance are the same people who can't stand to hear another's viewpoint and who are the most intolerent people on the planet.
I worked in radio during the "fairness doctrine" years. It resulted in the worst talk shows ever. Boring, non-controversial in many cases. We had to be worried about offending every fringe group out there because they'd go running to the FCC and did ! Don't ever want to see it come back. I think this latest go round is being aimed at Limbaugh and Hannity. I used to enjoy listening to those guys, but now it is pretty much a steady stream of borderline hate. I think they are pushing it too far, but hey....they're making millions off their rants. They are brilliant broadcasts though.

The thing is, that's the type of people that are gaining power now. I'm not saying all Democrats or Liberals are like that though, just to be clear. There are Republicans that way as well..

I'm honestly not a fan of either of them, they are both a little extreme for me. But I will fight tooth and nail for their rights of free speech. Limbaugh's show has been specifically mentioned by several of the the supporters of returning the fairness doctrine.
This is just another piece of bad news. But based on the present cast of characters this could actually happen. My sense is that few people know about it and few care the implications. It will be up to the talk show hosts to get the word out and present their case. They will doing so as the water fills the boat. They will make it all about Limbaugh and Hanity.
The liberals won't care about the first ammendment as long as they can get Limbaugh and Hanity. Unfortunately the results will be many radio stations going out of business and the cable and internet stations would pick them up. It would be a great deal for XM and others to put the radio stations out of business and just broadcast to paying customers.
Would 20 milion cable subscribers sign up and pay to listen to their favorite shows. Regardless the radio stations would go out of business with liberal commentators just like all the others.
I haven't read the other posts yet but my immediate reaction is......
You get the government that you deserve. And we are getting just what we voted for and therefore deserve.
The present administration and its cohorts were voted in by a pissed off, non-thinking, overly emotional electorate and now we are all going to have to deal with it.
Like it or not we are now a Socialist/Totalitarian State. Period. End of story.
Kiss dissent good bye unless you want to see blood in the streets.
It isn't hard to come to that conclusion when, as we speak, three renegade Rhino Republican Senators hold the fate of our nation in their hands. Snowe, Collins and Specter will cast the deciding votes in this. If they go with the Socialists then the deed is done, and freedom of speech will not the only thing that will be a memory.
If they go with the Repubs, the bill will most likely pass anyway because the GOP doesn't have enough thumbs to plug up all of the holes in the dyke, but at least the sound of thinking Americans will be heard as a long echo as we fall deeper and deeper into the well. The drooling jackals will defecate into the well and our children will have no water.
You can say that "love will find a way", that the voices of discussion and reason will find a way to have themselves heard, but if they do it will be a pitiful and crying shame that they will have had to resort to such measures in order to enjoy what was once a proof positive "given" for the American people.

It will be a sad day for the constitution WHEN they pass it.
Just read the other posts and the Town Hall article.
Let me ask you one question.
What would the Left be doing if the situation was reversed?
Do you think for one second that they would be jumping up and down trampling on the first amendment if it was their point of view that was being trumpeted over the AM band?
Not on you life!
What would the Conservative be doing?
The wouldn't be trying to change the constitution, that is for certain!
They would be out there competing fairly and openly in the market place for the ear of the listener.
This makes me want to toss lunch.
Jack
Nope RJ, not a sad day for the constitution.
The constitution will have been broken and the rest of it will fall more readily. In a couple of years it will look like some sort of Roman ruin.
The sad part is for US. The folks who actually think about what is going one AND for those poor souls on the left who think with their hearts and bellies and sex organs.
It will be a GOOD day though for those in the Elite Left who will then have all of the power over the cattle that they could ever want. They will be the ones who feel the rush of power over the mindless worker bee peons and the glow of fine wine and hundred dollar steaks and slinky women. Opps! I forgot, they are already doing that! ;-)
Jack
The sad thing about our constitution is that now it is whatever the supreme court says it is. Meaning a left leaning or right leaning court could take away at any time what we think we have as "rights" under the consitution.
Is anyone putting any thought to what might be hidden in this so called stimulus bill? I'll eat my shorts if there's not some stealth social engineering in there that's not been reported on.

In truth, that's how it has always been and will always be. The ideological tilt of the Supreme Court has always determined how the Constitution is construed. You can make your arguments about some justices being "strict constructionists" versus those who view it as a "living document" (to be constantly reevaluated), but in truth there is no consistency from the justices' opinions that solidly puts left or right always in one camp or the other.
It is ironic and tragic that the left has spent the last eight years whining that former President Bush trampled on the Constitution in the name of domestic security, and now those same voices seek to trample the constitution themselves under the misnomers of "the fairness doctrine" and the "free choice act" concerning talk radio and union organizing.

Brilliant prose Jack! I nominate this as quote of the week.
I agree with pretty much everything that has been said, and you always gotta love Jack's posts! I don't really know what to say about it all, except that it's hard for me to see nearly everyone my age (and other age groups) just follow all this blindly. It puts me in a really bad mood!

Uh, would you rephrase that for me please?
I agree with Twigworker. [gasp]
By our own laws, even Nazi's/ skin heads/KKK/ and Commies can have their say.
Notice 'Air America' failed?
They just couldn't get enough listeners.
I listen a coupla of times but was bored.
Part of their problem was , THEY REFUSED TO HAVE CALLERS!
The right wing shows have all kinds of callers, including liberals...........
And they make MONEY.
Good for them!
Wish I could make some $$$$
But nobuddy [sic] wants to listen to my sales pitch about synthetic oil...................
