Spinal Tap

I just read an article that BMW is considering selling engines and transmissions to other companies, in addition to sticking them in their own cars. This got my imagination working...

Anybody every try to stuff one of these Bavarian brutes into a humble MG-B? Either an I4 or I6? What the heck, how about their V12? Or the twin-turbo'ed I6 (wipes drool off keyboard) they put in some of the new M series's.

Could it (reasonably) be done? Should it be done? Would it be prudent to have 300+HP on tap in a 1900-ish pound car? (<-- Probably not for MY life expactancy...YMMV)

What do you think?

I asked this question before.

Anything can be done, given enough money and time.

Now that would go to 11!

I believe they are already doing it....Morgan? And early on they sold engines to Ford for the land Rover until Ford got it redesigned for their own.

I've always want to put an S14 out of an e30 M3 in my car. 2.3L I4 with 200HP and a 7250 RPM. Also has individual throttle bodies and is 16-valve DOHC.

The twin turbo (sequential) I6 they make doesn't come in the M3, it comes in the 335i. The M3 has a V8.

My current project, (I should say other because current implies that the B is actually done) is a 735 with the 3.5 I6. It's really been a joy to work on. Seems like I can work on it all day with 3 or 4 sizes of wrenches. I must say it's been a nice change unscrewing bolts without having to curse at them for half an hour first.

I think they are too tall to fit in a B. A Nissan V6, on the other hand...

I haven't heard of any in the works or finished but the idea has floated around on the boards before. Have you checked the British V8 newsletter and see if any are posted there? http://www.britishv8.org/index.htm

Now you're talking. Mary had a Maxima SE with the V6 - that has to be one of the smoothest reciprocating engines ever built! Torque and power all the way through the rev-range, and pretty good fuel mileage too! VERY impressive!

Ding ding ding. We have a winner.

I've ridden in an M-Roadster (styled similarly to a Z3) and was impressed. I thought it would be cool to throw one of those engines into an MGB. It would be a good deal of work and a lot of money (the engines are $$$$$) but would be an interesting conversion.

I have always wondered about putting the engine and trans oiut of an Honda S2000 into a MGB. 2.0L I4, rear wheel drive 240hp with a six speed trans, now that I would like to see and drive.

I believe Honda engines spin the opposite direction, so that would have to be dealt with.

As far as BMW motors go, I don't think any of their I6 would fit in the engine bay as they are pretty long. You'd have to do some pretty extreme modification to the car to make it fit.

The I4 Duratec that Ford makes (comes in Focus among many other things) seems like a decent engine. Makes 143HP and 154 ft lbs of torque stock, and there are several companies making turbo and supercharger kits for them.

Then there is always the option of a rotary. :)

The S2000 engine turns the conventional direction, unlike most other Honda engines.

I always liked the BMW slant 6's. Personally I would do an ecotec swap seeing that a stock engine with a turbo will put out a nice 400hp.

But

I have a spare Supra engine w/ 5 speed in the garage....anyone dare me?

You are right, the current "modern looking" Morgan uses the BMW V8 and BMW also used to supply Land Rover with Diesel engines until the Ford-Peugeot units got intoduced.

the zetech would ideed make a nice conversion. but they are all sidewinders and it gets pricey sourcing bits to convert (Chaterham and Birkin use this lump, and some of their dealers may have parts). I looked it it several years ago and the parts price, with engine and box was getting north of $7 Big. not counting making the mounts, adapting the Evergreen ECU to the M wiring, etc.
