So I would like to know how much a Mk1 Midget weighs without it's engine and transmission. So it needs to be the weight of a side curtain car.

Much appreciated guys.

hmmm

I've got a bare '74 sitting in my garage right now, but no scale (and its got more reinforcement than your Mk1 so it'll weigh more anyway).
My bathroom scale only goes up to 300lbs, I wonder.....

about 1400lbs complete... I'm not sure how much the lump weights. 100 lbs together???

I'd like to weigh mine. I am curious as it is pretty well stripped of all interior and trim.

I think normal weight is around 1800#. The engine with tranny probably weighs 250 ish.

My old Haynes manual listed the weight of the Bugeye at 1860 and the engine/transmission assembly at 285 with accessories. Of course with the engine out then you wouldn't have fluid in the radiator or it would be removed, so drop another 25 or so pounds there. That leaves about 1550.

You don't need to hassle with weighing it... if it fits, it ships.

I should have weighed mine before and after I scraped all of the crud off. lol

IIRC, the tub, prepped and painted is around 600 pounds. The fenders, hood, doors and trunk total 80 pounds.

As I get mine reassembled, I'll let you know the rest!

Well I am trying to just get a rough estimate of what my car will weigh with the 4age and t50 in it. Of course I could just go put the shop scales under each corner but I was bored.

The 1098 lump that came out definately did NOT weigh 100lbs. Every time I pick up one of these A series motors I am amazed at how much they weigh and that transmission may be an aluminum case but it has o be at least twice as heavy as the T50.

Of course I could have spent 11,000 dollars on the spare 1275 and made 107hp!

I want to shoot for 1200 lbs so I am thinking about a one piece FG nose, gives me a good excuse to put a bugeye or lenham nose on it anyway.

Pictures within a week or so

Jay, 1200 pounds will be hard to get to with a street legal car, those pesky things like wipers etc do add some weight. The glass nose will help but to get down to 1200 with the engine and trans installed you're going to need less of everything. Consider glass or aluminum racing seat to start with, a glass deck lid, no hinges on the hood or trunk. No bumpers either. I did add some weight to my car with the V6 and the roll bar, tips the race scales at 2110 now with a full trunk of travel spares and a full tank of gas. That's for a MKIII with the door bars and roll up windows and folding top, but the bumpers have been replaced with Bugeye units front and rear, no carpets except for over the trans tunnel and Nissan seats. If you can keep it under 1800 when street ready I think you'll be doing great.

"Adding lightness", as Colin Chapman preached, is a fun but maddening exercise.

You'll be surprised how much bumper bolts and reinforcements add up to.

And, as Bill points out, you'll be surprised how much weight is still there.

Silly stuff adds up too. One plastic horn secured with a tie-wrap weighs much less than two metal horns with bracketry and bolts. The heater core, hoses, fan and brackets add up fast. A bungee cord can hold down the fiberglas trunk lid.

On and on. good luck!

Have you looked into a carbon fiber bonnet. In a previous thread, it was established that the stock hood weighs roughly 40lbs. Seems like you could dump a decent amount of weight (and money) right there.

The fiberglas hood, fenders and trunk weigh roughly half what their steel counterparts do. 40' steel / 20' glas for the hood, and the other 3 parts total 40/20. Carbon would save more lbs, but at a cost of many more $$$.

Save your carbon money for a pair of composite rear leaf springs.

Another often overlooked weight saver... make the steering column shaft out of tubing instead of a steel bar. That sucker is heavy!

Bill hit it on the nose,,,,

no wiper motor, no wipers, cut down windshield to 6 inches using a plexiglass piece, fiberglass one piece nose, tubular steering shaft, four link rear suspension with coil over shocks.

ever drive a 125cc shifter kart? well then you have sat in the 1piece fiberglass bucket seats I am going to use.

my plan is to have what appears to be a road going scca Hprod car with an interior in it, and of course the pretty toyota lump under the hood to eviscerate Miatas with.
