After reading some posts about anti theft devices and Fire preventatives, I thought I would post some pics of the setup I placed in my car when I replaced the floorboards.

Having seen a couple of designs and locations on the net I decided to do my own thing to make them a little less visible. Also by utilising a key style switch you can remove the ability for anyone to start it.

The design also has two isolation switches one for both the positive and negative terminal to eliminate any earth leakage problems. Havent had any starting issues since installation and its luck to be driven once a week.

The new grounding point was moved from in front of the battery to the side angled bracket closest to the drive shaft. The previous grounding point would have interfered with the wooden box.

The switch mounting point is recessed midway into the box to allow the keys to be flush on one side, and the rear terminals to be flush on the rear. A new set of cables were utilised and the lead from the battery to the starter switch had a new terminal crimped on as it had to be shortened a little. A cover was then made for the rear face and sealed to prevent water ingress. I have no intent of driving through high water so it shouldn't be an issue.

The photos show how it looks before and after construction.

The two earth leads and battery lead enter from the underside of the box. Its harder for water to travel up the cable then down from the top. The wire to the starter (Not Shown) exits from the right of the box.

The final shot shows the carpet over the switches with a small velcro'd cover to hide them from view.

A view from the underside, can just make out earth point on left of angled frame. Battery is secured front to back no from the sides.

Lovely job, Jeremy! It's a very clever design to allow a flush appearance in the cockpit. I put mine on the passenger side, hoping that I might be more easily able to flip the switch open in an emergency from the driver's seat, but this is probably wishful thinking. Beautiful!

One question. Are you always going to have that battery cut-off switch KEY in your pocket when you need it in an emergency? The removable key could be a problem if it is ever not real handy when you need it.

My BCO switch was a very simple installation, one hole with a hole saw and two wood screws, and the control knob stays attached, so can never be lost. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et203d.htm

I installed it when the car still had 2x6V batteries. It is in the chassis ground cable and is located low behind the seat on the driver side (LHD). It is not so easy to operate when seated, but but very easy to reach when standing outside. With the black knob on black carpet low behind the seat, hardly anyone would even notice it is there (unless they were specifically looking for it. I have never use it as a theft deterrent anyway, not in 25 years an nearly 400,000 miles.

The paddle-type switch that I use comes with an extra removable paddle, which--along with an extra ignition key--can be hidden somewhere in the car. Maybe not as cool, though, as the secret carpet flap shown above. That said, the Lucas-type switch that Barney uses wins out for its authentic appearance if nothing else.
