Now that the engine of the 65 Midget is running well the noise associated with shifting gears and the jerkiness needs to be dealt with. She has less of a tendency to slip out of gear than she has to screetch when shifting and jerk back and forth at mid-rpm range. And that nerve-wracking some-times clunk. Universals are tight. I am thinking "very old clutch with worn friction plate, flywheel getting scarred, old engage springs...how do I make it stop! So I think OK, clutch-time...or?

Does this seem like the right diagnosis?

If so, how much has to be pulled out of the car before installing a new clutch kit? Can just the transmission be dropped, the old clutch pulled, new one installed and the intact transmission be reinstalled? Or do I need to pull the engine plus transmission and do the job out of the car?

For the 65 Midget what is the best and (sorry) fastest approach to installing the clutch kit?

Thank you!

Engine and trans need to be pulled. Slipping
out of gear is not a clutch issue more like gear issues=[. Screeching when clutch is pushed could be bad clutch or even a greasy one. Installing the clutch kit is easy but getting to it is the time consuming part.

Thanks Jason. The screeching happens largely when I downshift 4-3gear, but it is in the background (sometimes foreground) during other parts of the driving sequence as well. The jerking in gear when at relatively low rpm (not so low that ignition warning light comes on though) gives me pause. The popping out of gear episodes are only occasional, but cause for concern. Could a worn/old clutch also contribute to this (exacerbating a gear issue that otherwise might be a non-issue? Cheers! Ride well.

Assuming you have oil in the gearbox, the screetching is most likely clutch.

Nasty stuff in transmission is more typically a rumble or grinding noise. A skreetch emanating from the gearbox (or rear-end) is typically swiftly accompanied by lock-up of the unit!

"Jerking" at low rpm is typically more of a lugging the motor issue... don't try to apply power at those rpm, down-shift.

Popping out of gear could be several things, culminating with worn-out internal bits, but it may also be in the linkage, sepecially if you have a lot of vibration or shaking.

In among all the noises you mentioned I herad "clunk" If you are a wire wheel guy that sound comes from worn splines in the rim and on the hub. I know cuz I got 'em

Thanks jason,

I am getting myself psyched for the pull. And I am waiting for less rain and cold, but can start to put together the parts list and order. Cheers

Are the splines of the wire wheels and hubs replacable? Could it also be the "sliding spline between the propellor shaft and the gearbox unit" that dampens t" the fore-and-aft movement of the rear axle and other components"

Are you talking cable linkage or hydraulic linkage or all the above?

I was referring to the internal linkage, i.e. from the lever bottom to the shift forks.

I doubt the sliding splines in the driveshaft are an issue since they are lubed via the transmission oil and I've never heard of them wearing out.

Yeah, the hubs are replaceable.

Thank you!Doesn't seem like linkage at the forks but hub or drive train...oh yeah.

screetch can be a throwout bearing to...or if it has one a pilot bearing
