After reading 200mph's response on the Spridget MPG post, I am wondering what are the tallest and widest size tires any of you have used on a RWA, without any clearance problems?

I had 205 50 13's on my 73 RWA mounted on aluminum 6" rims. They would rub the outer rear fender edge slightly when the rear suspension was bottomed. I mounted the same tires on some 7" rims and have a slight rub at full lock at the lower edge of the front fenders, but the front sits a little lower now with the V6 than it did with the 1275. I think that width and height is about the limit that the stock wheel wells will reasonably tolerate under full suspension travel. I don't know what tire size that would relate to with a 14 or 15" wheel but I do know that the wheel offset is really important when you get into that size range.

I went with 175 70R 13 with Yokohama Avid T4...took a little modification (grinding and cutting around the inner rear fender opening) to keep from cutting rear tires on hard cornering...and only a few swings of a mallet to modify the front inner wheel well so that no rubs...and i am pleased with the ride and handling.

Paul, did those tires result in noticabley lower RPMs at cruising speeds, and how much did it throw off your speedometer?

If I recall correctly original specs were 145 70 R13s so it should be the same, just with a wider footprint.

I would have to say your mistaken man.

70= 70% of the width is the sidewall height

145 x .7 = 101.5 x2 = 203 / 25.4 = 8 inches total sidewall height

8 + 13 rim = 21 inches overall tire height

170/70/13 is 22.4

175/70/13 is 22.65

Not noticebly, but they must somewhat.

I never trust speedos in all my old cars so i do not use them much, so i am not sure how innacurate it is with the new tires...I just go with what feels right and always err on the side of speed...haha
