I was talking to one of the ladies at work today, and she told me that her husband got interested in cars as a young boy by reading a book about a red MG. She tried to research a bit, but could not come up with anything. Her husband is 58, so that sets the time frame for when he would have read this book. It sounds familiar to me, but I cannot place a title. Anyone here know what book he read? She would really like to find a copy for a gift, but needs a title.

The Red Car
Considered a Holy Icon of MGs in many circles

Emmanuel - the title is "The Red Car" It was written by Don Stanford, Copyright 1954 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 54-9735. Go into Google, type "The Red Car" Stanford (just as I have typed it here) and you should find somewhere to purchase the book.
Cheers,
Wonderful! I knew someone here would know the answer. I will pass this info along, and it sounds as though I need to get a copy for myself.
Here's one for ya.
Take a look at the price.

Me thinks someone misplaced their decimal point!
That Funk & Wagnalls 1954 first edition is pricey. Next in line is a 1971 Scholastic book services paper back at $213.00, then a 1972 Grosset & Dunlap published hard back at $74.00. The least expensive being a $21.50 paperback put out by Tempo books 1963. I know what I'll be looking for on my next visit to St Vincent De Paul's.

I remember reading The Red Car when I was in grade school. I am gonna go to our local library today and put in a request for it.

one of these days I am going to start a contest. The winner will be some one who asks a genuine MG question that after a predetirmined amount of time does not elicit the correct answer from a member of this board.
After reading this thread I seriously doubt if it will ever be won!
I admit I was reading the thread at work but could not post until now. I have the book and can not believe the price. A friend gave it to me last summer when I finished the red 67B. I took it to car shows and tried to read it while sitting with the car. I'm afraid to open it now. :)

and not for sale!!!!!!
edit for pics
I've bought two of them in the past year or two, each for about $20. You can get them brand new from Amazon and others. The $2,000 price quoted above is most certainly a typo.
You think?
I have no idea at all Steve, some of the others on the sites were in the hundreds of dollars.
But, just because someone asks a price, doesn't mean its WORTH the price. even if some yahoo pays that price!
I'm kinda like forest gump, I don't really know much about nuthin, but, I was totally knocked over when I went into these antique stores up in Cambria a little while ago. I didn;t want to even go, the old lady dragged me, THEn couldn;t get me out. These places were STUFFED full of old timer car stuff. Books, plaques, oil cans, everything you could think of. AND EXPENSIVE! WOW.
I could have stayed in those stores for DAYS. I actually outlasted her by hours! What a turn around.

The only date found in the book is copyright, 1954. It was a library book at a school and has a checkout card in the back with dates from 1963-1966. Hard bound red cover with chapter 1 starting on page 3. Well its priceless to me. I wonder were Hap is today and what he is doing.

Scary to think that Hap would now be in his seventies!
Another great series of books is Burt Levy's "Last Open Road" series, which are based on the adventures of a teenage gearhead in New Jersey named Buddy Palumbo but set in the same timeframe. There are a total of four titles in that series now, all good, but IMHO the first one is still the best.
I was at a swap meet today and the first table I came to had some books on it. There was note saying that the seller was looking around and if you wanted to buy one of the books you could just toss the money through the open window on his car. picked up a mint copy from 1962, soft cover Temp Books version. It's never been read! A good start!
