Well, after all the help with photos of brake routing, I have started to bend them up using a non-factory routing. It is more a case of keeping a clean look. I was not happy with how the factory routed them around the shock absorbers.

Looks sharp. Are you going to use clips to keep them from fretting on the sheetmetal!

Yeah, I kinda like brakes, so the lines will be clipped down good and tight! This game of bending up lines is kinda fun if you are willing to scrap a bit of tube to get it right. Good news is that a roll of tube is only $16, so re-dos are not expensive.

what is the tubing made out of? Is it painted?

It is just a roll of brake line bought at the local NAPA. Comes in either black or green and is really just a paint. May or may not have any rust inhibiting properties.

Making your own lines is way cheaper than buying premade stuff from the regular suspects. The only downside is the need to buy a good flaring tool that will do bubbleflairs.

Nice work Peter ! Looks much better than the factory routing.
I used a premade kit so I had to follow the original pattern. This is a bit more work but it really looks the part !

Brian:

Yeah, I did a bunch of research (as in: pestered a bunch of people on this board and the Spritespot ) and found that they did in fact go over the shock. Thing is I was not happy with the routing as it looked a bit untidy. Also, it looked to be in the way of removing a shock in case of repair.

Those lines look great, Pete. I remember when I restored my Midget back in the '80s I replaced the lines with copper. They looked a million dollars. Now I'm about to do it all again.

Are you using braided hoses to the calipers?

John:

Not planning to do the braided hoses, but only becasue I am not keeping the car and have agreed to hand it over at a fixed price! I may have already exceeded the agreed price with the parts I have bought! The project came with "new" front flex hoses so I will go with that.

That said, if I was keeping the car, I would not go without them. The difference they made to my MGB GT was amazing. I figure the drums on the bug can use all the help they could get!
