I recently bought a 1978 "sports car" from California that was advertised as an original owner car. It's a very clean, low mileage original car that I am pleased with, however the accompanying receipts are incomplete and make me wonder if it was 1 owner.
Is there a way to check owner history, or even the number of owners through Calif DMV?
Thanks
Pete

Pete,
I go by the last number on the title numbers. If you're the 2nd owner it should be a 2.

Pete, I think that you can, it will probably cost you several $, but at least you can get the information you need. Here's the link to the CA DMV. Good luck.:)

You can check the smog history on the DMV site. When, where, and by who. Its public information and all you need is the license plate #. http://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/Vehicle/PubTstQry.aspx

You can also get a VIN history from your personal Auto insurance dealer. That's howmy sister found out her newer Honda had a salvage title in vegas, then was laundered through a few states to clean it, until it ended up here in MN. Insurance guys have access to a LOT of data that even Carfax can't touch!

Very difficult to get such info from the DMV. They don't typically share it freely. Good luck though!

correct. Privacy issues.

and any way, what real difference does it make?

Actually you can fairly easily. I ran a check on my 64. You must show proof that you are the present owner and you can request a title search for a small amount - $5 as I recall. That will get you a computer printout of the owner history. Unfortunately for me, they only could produce a record back to 75.

Here is the link to the form:

The difference is, that was how the car was advertised (one owner) and one of the factors in making my buying decision over a similar car.

Otherwise, thanks for the info gentleman, I will follow through on the suggestions and see where it goes.
In the meantime I will continue to enjoy the car, regardless of the outcome. I would just like to know.
Pete
