I'm reasembling my 1275 engine. I put the cam back in, the oil pump is on, and the front end plate and cam end cover are on. I don't have the timing gear, nor distributor drive in place yet.
How much should the cam move in and out at this point? I think this movement is called end-play. Mine will move about 2mm in and out. Haynes calls for up to 1.78mm max, which mine is probably close to, but it seems like a lot of movement.
Does the timing chain sprocket take up some of the slack?
Thanks,
Bryan

2mm seems like quite a bit, that is about .080" (more than 1/16"). I don't have a manual handy but if I remember the endplay is more like .004" which is about .10mm.

You need to install the timing gear before you measure it.

Yep, it needs to be taken just as it would be run, meaning timing gear installed as mention and might as well install the distributor gear as well, then take a measurement.
