The turn indicators in my '73 B will not turn off after turning. Is this something an amateur can troubleshoot and does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi John can you recall the last time they did cancel ... did you hear anything like breaking plastic or did the stalk get very stiff right before? Happened to me - stalk became harder to move then a little "snap", and the stalk went limp, floppy. It still engaged the signals but you had to hold it up for RH turn and both sides wouldnt cancel no more. Then I found a tiny round white bit of broken plastic on the floor :( Lived with it awhile then replaced the switch with a new old stock Lucas (wasnt cheap)

If it hasnt been too long look carefully on the car's floor. I kinda doubt anything in there is fixable; maybe someone here knows better.

You should be able to look into the problem, John. Here's another thread related to your problem.

Look at the picture showing the "cam" or "lobe" that is supposed to cancel the signal after turning. You'll need to remove your steering wheel and the clam-shell shroud on the column, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Replacement switch is #32:

The plastic cam becomes brittle with age and use. Replacing one is an exercise in patience. Pull one wire from existing harness and plug into appropriate location on new. Its nice to have turn signals that cancel, I was very happy when I did it.

hardest part will be pulling the steering wheel. you can get the column clamshell cover off without pulling the wheel but its a Mother. should be a pin in the back of steering wheel that fits into a slot in the self cancelling mechanish. most likely if they were working but now not the plastic part has been damaged. good luck

Do you have an after market steering wheel / boss that might possibly be missing the pins that turn the canceler collar in the switch?
