Hey Guys,
Car drives really well for about five minutes then it just starts bunny hopping in gear then stalling when you give it throttle. I replaced the spark plugs on it and it made a difference as the car can idle better and runs a bit smoother but there is still something crazy wrong with it. I'm putting an electronic ignition kit in it and I'll set the timing and see if that rectifies it. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?
Car is a 78 Californian B about to be de-smogged, everything else is stock.
Dave.

Substitute a known good externally resisted coil.
You don't even have to bolt it down, just hang the wires on it and make a little nest so that it doesn't flop around for a few minutes.
I would hope that you made sure that you have sufficient gasoline. LOL
More than a few other possibilities, but the coil thing is what I would check first.

That happened to me when debris from my rusty tank caused my fuel pump to deliver too little fuel. Ran ok till the bowls emptied out...
Cheers for the replies,
Yeah it's got just under half a tank of fuel. I'll put some more in it though. After I do the ignition I'll replace the coil and see how that goes.
Dave.
Do the coil FIRST.
It is possible that a bad coil might damage something in the new module.
Fix what's broken before you add the bling.

Ok, I will put a new coil in it. The Bosch SU12R seems to be a good replacement. I'll let you know how I go with it.
Cheers,
Dave.
I am not sure about the exact Bosch part number, but the one that you want for your car in stock configuration will the the externally resisted RED one.

Whenever I see a "runs okay and then stalls" message I always think that a vacuum is being pulled in the fuel tank. Try running with the gas cap off and see if the problem goes away.
I agree. The fuel pump may also be sucking air from the line to the tank. Does the fuel pump continue to click after the engine shuts down? If not, the points in it may be pitted and require servicing. RAY
