I am putting this in the off topic because it is about an old Chevrolet truck I am rebuilding. I have everything off the frame and I am not trying to make this a show truck but a driver. I have read where people have used POR 15 on the frame and it does not require sandblasting. I can get a wire brush to every surface and would like to to just paint the frame.

Where do you buy it and can it be brushed or only sprayed. I have looked up on the Internet but really can't find a store in California. Is it something you just order on line.

Or is there a better solution.

I've never used POR 15, but I think people buy it on line. I've seen a website that sells it, and the site should be easy to find.

This is the truck you drove up to the NW to get a while back? Good to hear you are making progress.

Richard,

I couldn't find it locally, but purchased it online.

You can buy POR 15 online from a number of places. I at first purchased here:
http://www.por15.com/

but then found better pricing here (not sure how pricing compares now):
http://www.stoprust.net/

I recommend buying their complete system: Marine Clean, Metal Ready & POR 15. This stuff is designed to go directly over rust, but I have painted bare metal & also over original paint. If you do paint over old paint, it does not provide the advertised rust prevention but does provide a very hard painted surface.

I have used both the semi-gloss & gloss finishes & like the gloss best.

I have brushed & sprayed it & although it does lay down nicely, I got a better finish when I sprayed it.

I also recommend buying the material in small containers (6 pack of pints for example) as it will harden if the container is not tightly sealed. I stole some the "press & seal" kitchen wrap from the kitchen & used that between the can & lid when closing cans.

I recently reopened a can that had been closed for 6 months plus & material was still good.

Good luck!

A friend of mine just this with a 65 Chev truck frame and used Easwoods Rust Encapsulator. He brushed it on with a sponge brush and it looks fantastic. A lot less hassle than the POR for that situation.

Richard, I used a product called Rust Bullet on my front end. Its a one part urethane that's self priming and rust resistant. It gets real hard like an epoxy but without having to do the A&B deal. Just pour a little acetone around the rim after poking some drain holes, and on top of the remaining paint before closing the lid. It works like the old oil paints meaning it wants to flow( drip) so just keep brushing it out. It came out of Las Vegas and was shipped promptly. Good luck!

A efffective alternative is to use a phosphoric acid solution, Ospho is one brandname or that other stuff, I forget the name, at Lowe's, and then seal it with either Rustoleum paint or some truck bed liner stuff from a parts house. All are very available and very easy to use.

Thanks for the help I put the truck up high on jack stands today to start the chassis part of the project. I have finished the engine and it looks very good with edelbrock chrome valve covers, manifold and carburetor. I have sandblasted most of the parts of the body and was only able to save the radiator frame and hood up front. Had to buy all new parts. I think I am going to change the truck to a step side short bed from the long bed fleet side.
