I have a Dell monitor that is turning itself off after I turn it on. Screen displays normal for about two seconds then shuts it's self off. I have rebooted the system and unplugged the monitor and plugged it back up and the results are the same, just shuts it's self off. Is there something that I can do to get it to stay on or is it telling me I'm unworthy?

Sounds like the power supply is shutting down in the monitor.

I have repaired a few by replacing the capacitors on the power board inside the monitor.

Probably time to start shopping for a new one.

Possibly the Windows Power Saving option is turned on and set to an extremely short time period.

I have sent two back within the last 2 months for warranty repair for the same problem.

They were about 2.5 yrs old.

You can unplug the monitor from the PC and see if the symptoms are the same.

OK, Two questions. Will any monitor interface with my Dell computer? At age 68 I think I should go to a bigger screen to be able to read print more gooder, will a bigger screen do that for me?

What Don said. The bigger the better. It should have a VGA cable on it now.

Just make sure the new one has the same connector to match the connector on the PC.

Some newer monitors only have a DVI connector. A lot of them have both VGA and DVI.

I pretty much went over the top and am using a 30" monitor which used to hang in my bedroom. I decided to stop watching TV in there (in fact, I got rid of cable tv all together - don't miss it a bit) and I was needing a monitor, so I figured "what the hell". Works a treat, and really easy on these tired eyes.

VGA has very little pins inside the connector

DVI is a solid connector, with rows of little squares

Google the terms to bring up images, and match it with your present monitor.

You can get a used 19-23" widescreen on ebay for $70-120 or so.

Ken, check your local computer stores, mine has a 21.5" for $158.00 brand new with a warranty. Costco also has decent quality monitors and are usually very competitively priced. If you don't mind unplugging everything, you can even take the computer in with you to make sure you get one that will work with your PC.

Ken,

I also have a Dell and replaced my monitor some time ago with one fom Staples. I don't
remember what I paid for it but it hooked up the same as the old one and works fine on
my Dell. The (flat) screen size is about 14" wide by 9" high, and the make is View Sonic.
If I was able to hook mine up you should be able to do it also. No big deal.

Thanks George, I'm using a spare about the size your using but I done got the hots for a bigger screen. Looked at a few and found the bigger is easy on the eyes.

Ken,monitors are measured on the diagonal dimension just like TVs. For some reason, everyone is making the print too darn small on everything these days so I have had to keep getting bigger and bigger monitors. I have a 23" that I love right now.

Viewsonic and Asus are two excellent brands, look for the best price and go for it. Google is your friend when it comes to reviews of various monitor brands, be sure to research the specific model you are considering.

I would avoid Radio Shack unless they have a killer sale, I have always found them to be terribly overpriced. But I do agree on Staples, Best Buy, Office Max and similar places to shop.

If you find one you like, post the manufacturer and model for recommendations.

Larry, I've been having a blast wandering through local pawn shops looking at monitors. The fine print bothers me too and if you don't know it here's a handy trick. Press and hold down the key at the far SW corner of your keyboard, mine's got a little star symbol on it, while holding that key down scroll the wheel on your mouse...the type will get bigger or smaller depending on which way your scroll. If you know a way to make the print bolder or darker I'm interested.

Our Goodwill has tons of monitor for $20 to 30 . In our area they put all the computer stuff in one store and have a tech to check everthing out. Find out where the computer store is and your set...

Hi Ken, that's a great tip. Doesn't work on my Macbook but I'll give it a shot on my PC.

One more note about monitors. I assume you won't be getting one of the old CRT (tube) type monitors, they are way out-dated. LCD monitors come in two versions - older ones have a fluorescent tube backlight that is prone to going out (which is probably what is wrong with your monitor) but newer ones are lit with LEDs that almost never go out. If I were you, I would definitely only buy one of the newer LED monitors, I believe they will last far longer than the standard LCD ones.

With your PC on, can you hold a flashlight at a sharp angle to the screen and see the icons? If so, your back-light is out. The bulbs themselves do go out eventually, but they usually last longer than the inverter (think of it like a ballast on a garage fluorescent light fixture). In my experience, replacing the inverter usually revives the monitor - they're only about $25-30 and not terribly difficult to replace. The hardest part is figuring out how to take the thing apart. If you're fairly handy taking things apart, you might give it a shot.

Best of luck,
Larry

..JC, you live on the Tenn river, treat yourself to a monitor exorcism by water, and throw the damnable evil bastid into the river, with a long piece of dental floss tied to the power cord. When you go to retrieve it for a second cleansing should the floss break and the monitor be sweep away by the current you will know you did the right thing, and the spell will be broken...shirley you know, the evil spirit that was the machine cannot cross rivers...Joy will spread across the land and bells will toll and birds will sing....JC...we're talkin a real zip itty do dah fantasmalrific regeneration of thy Lord God Fullers Mother Earth.....in pills or powder...then and only then go to your nearest Goodwill emporium for your spiritual PC needs................this came to me last nite at 3am in the lavoratory while standing waitin for my own spiritual relief.......just sayin....

Wyatt, Wished you'd told me that quicker. The evil spirits were shot in target practice with my neighbor. After a brief ceremony, a blindfold was placed on the shooter, my neighbor, then he was commander by devineism to guide him to the target. Well, I want ya to know his first shot hit my barn, the second shot hit his barn, then finally the devines alined and he was able to expell the evil spirits with a four round burst. But, interestingly enough, you post reminded me to try to complete my book "Understanding Wyatt'...I've come a long way in developing it, I even have the cover for it, as below, you can see the WTF? in her expression. Interesting story about what happened right after the pix was taken but anyhows that's the pix the book cover will have, just want to keep you posted.

I think she wanted to but I blew it. I had just asked her to be my Goddess and she thought I said something else. Here's a picture of her calling the fuzz on me.

Is that her boyfriend's name? Fuzz...

Or her Rotweiler?
