Carbs started flooding today - it's a good thing I added the overflow tube not long ago or it would have been on the exhaust pipe! The rear float hinge is worn through and the front had that little chunk of black crap on top of the needle. Not sure if which one caused the problem but niether are good. Going to run over to APT tomorrow for parts.

You wouldn't believe how many floats I see that are on the verge of wearing through, just like the one in the top pic.

It is a real shame that the metal tabbed floats cannot be found anymore. They are all now like the one in the bottom pic, that cannot be adjusted any other way then by shimming.

How would you shim one? It seemed to be pretty close but not right on.

Chuck,
I think Jimmy was referring to using shim washers under the float valve to make the adjustment since you cannot bend the float arms on the plastic ones. Joe Curto has these shim washers, I'm sure, or Jimmy may be able to sell you a few if you need a variety of different thicknesses.

I use a 30 mil nylon washer. hardware store stuff.

sets the level lower than spec, but readjust the jets to accommodate this and you're fine.

no problems with it like this for several years.

that little chunk of black "crap" is 99 percent flex fuel lines rotten .
most times it looks like coal dust in bottom of chamber.

Bob,

Thanks, yes that is what I meant. Joe Curto is now supplying several different thickness shims for under the needle & seat mounting. He is also now supplying a slightly shorter needle & seat assembly that lends to shimming to the correct height to accomodate the float positioning.

Please forgive my ignorance as I am not a pro at carbs by any means but it seems to me that if you were to shim the seat lower you wouldn't really change the position of the float relative to the needle/seat. Is this the reason for the shorter needle/seat assy being made by Curto?

The new style non adjustable floats will actually keep the fuel level in the float bowl too low, in some circumstances. The shorter needle and seats allow the float to go a bit too high in the bowl, but by using shims under the needle & seat it can be adjusted correctly.
