Well for a few weeks I have had a problem with shifting the tranny on the Grand Am, and yesterday I thought I'd try rebleeding the system. 30 minutes later no sign of the slave cyclinder, so I toom the car down to my usual out-=sourced mechanics.
The guy checked the car and did some tests and told me it didn't need bleeding as much as the slave cyclinder needed replacing. OK no problems but WHER IS IT??
Seems Pontiac built the 2.4l transverse engined cars with the slave cylinder hidden INSIDE the bellhousing. To replace the cylinder =- $700 (mostly labour - about 8 hours). For an extra $300 the clutch gets replaced at the same time.
Gees they really do not want us home mechanics to be able to do anything on these "modern" cars..

Fords had similar design. They did not call it a slave, rather a hydraulic throwout bearing
replaced one the other day in a pontiac sunfire.........most are in the bellhouseing now some rice burners still have them on the outside though
wait a few years and noone at home will be able to work on anything at home. wait till the 24/42 volt electrical systems start comming out to run all the gadgets we must have nowadays
2010 all GM vehicles will have bladder type fuel tanks too so there is no gas vapor to deal with eleminates some of the emission stuff but when a pump goes out you will have to replace whole tank cause it is one unit....$1200 cha ching
Oh and the new hybrid vehicles.....took a class on the battery systems on them a couple months back.......basically learned about 20 ways they can kill you....scarry stuff heading our way in a few years that will make it impossible for anyone to work on cars at our houses
