Sorry to bomb you with all these questions at once but, I hard a hard time with getting back into the BBS due to password problems. Anyway, the grommet or dustcap seems to be missing on my dipstick. Consequently, when I put the recommended amount of oil in the car, the dipstick tells me it's waaaay too much. So, if someone could tell me, say, the distance from the bottom of the stick to the grommet, I'd appreciate it. Again, it's a '66 roadster.

Thanks

Ken

Engine number?

There were 2-3 different used over the life of the car.

see mgbmga.com tech notes for discussion of dip sticks, dip stick tubes, and oil pans.

You could make a mark at the level you Know is right and then adjust you dip stick to match it.

The rubber grommet on my dipstick would only raise it approx 1/8th of an inch. If you could find an Oring that is about that diameter it should be about right. It would also stop the dipstick rattling.

Suggestion: At your next oil change put in 4.2 quarts and then push your dipstick in to it shows full and mark that point. That would be the accurate location to put a new seal on the dipstick.

My two cents :)

do a search. there was a post by JD Weimer about creating a new silicone stopper for your dipstick. Basically you put some grease down in the tube, put a glob of black silicone on the dipstick where the old rubber seal would have been, insert into tube and let it sit for 24 hours. remove and trim for appearance if needed.
