Just been out and bought a recon engine for my GT, came home and the missus was just naggin and naggin about the cost, I wish my GT could iron shirts....

Of course, thats's what they're there for right? Mine usually doesn't complain much about my cars though. Just lets me do my thing in the doghouse (garage). I pay for most of my stuff with money I make on little side jobs though or trade. I can sometimes squeeze a little here and there out of the checking account. Whatever the case, she'll get over it. Paul
Mine has been very good. She let my buy two engines, a new alternator (that I returned and have to repurchase), a new Big Bore Exhaust, a new rear end suspension kit, and a supercharger.
All of that this past month. I love her. :)
In defference to the following post...I did get her a new living room set, a new dishwasher, gutters around the house, back yard fencing, and an in-ground sprinkler system. :) The lawn gets ordered next week...sod that I have to install.
Did I lose out on this deal?!
I wanted a new $350 tool box from Sears. It only cost me that and $500 for a new "over the range" microwave. (Plus an hour to remove the old range hood and install the new micowave).
A fair amount of my time is spent in mergers and acquisitions, somehow my wife out does me on the negotiating every time!
My wife never complains. She's perfect, let's me do almost anything I want involving our MGs. The more I do, the more I spend on the cars, the happier she seems to be. She even lets me drive them on occasion.
:D
Ya, I do, don't I?
Now if she'd just be as interested in housework...
No complaints from my wife. She's the reason we have ours now! Found it for sale. I wanted it...but didn't want to spend the $ (kid in college, etc.). She talked me into it! I don't ever complain about anything she buys, she doesn't complain about stuff I buy. Been that way for 35 years so far...
My wife doesn't complain; usually it's me having huge remorse sessions over parts/cars that I've spent our hard earned money on.

No! she actually talked me into buying the MGA Coupe! I don't bring up the 4 season room she had built either! We have a good understanding, I don't make her go to car shows and she doesn't make me go to craft shows..worked for 20 years so far.
If it wasn't for my wife, I would only have two MGs to maintain. Because of her bad influence I have five!!! Just today she was trying to talk me into buying $400 worth of automotive artwork for the garage. I think she's insane.
I just discovered the engine in my "63 Jag is siezed. It may be a very good thing right now that I'm not married.....
Steve,
As an artist I can only say this about your wife. God Bless Her. I'm sure I speak for all the "starving artists" in the world.
To get into this thread, my wife saw an ad for a 52 TD advertised in our local paper in 1959 for $475.00. She said why don't you go look a it. I did, and bought it with the promise I would keep for about six months and then get rid of it if it gave me trouble. In 1974 a close friend died and his widow asked if she could store his TF in our garage until she decided what to do with it. I told her yes and when she decided a year later to sell the car, my wife said if you want it, get it. In 1984, one of our salesmen retired and with twin sons could not divide his 66 B so he asked me if I would like to buy it to get him out of his dilemma. Again my wife said if you want it, get it. Somehow another right hand drive TD arrived at our doorstep (a whole other story) well as a Healey 3000 MK II and a Healey 100/M. Unfortunately I did sell the last three cars but to this day we still have the TD, the TF, and the B. Maybe that's why I stayed with her for the past 54 years, but at times I'm surprised she didn't give me my walking papers. She has suffered in slience (mostly) for all these years and I guess I got real lucky when I popped the question to her. And after all this time we are still traveling in the B every summer.

Mine wife said . .. that sure is a pretty red car for sale over there . . what is it. I said an MG; not really worth anything, not much of a collector ... . I don't really like them.
A few days later, I stopped by and checked it out .. ..sure was a neat little MGB. I was hooked; but the car was sold.
A week later, found one for sale on e-bay; and it was only 30 minutes away. Went and looked at it, she drove it, she liked it, I liked that she liked it ... .. Now I own an MGB.
MG2006 came up; I said I would like to go but it is too expensive . .. . .she said; "Aw; come on .. you work hard and could use the vacation. Lets Go." So we went and enjoyed looking at the cars together. She really liked the T-series cars.
Found a TD for sale on e-bay . . . turns out to be about 2 hours away, but only 15 minutes from my boyhood home. I said; "Nah .. too expensive." She said, "I think we can find the money if you want it."
The story continues . . . . . .
I don't have a wife. I *am* the wife.
I don't complain about the time he spends on the car - after all, this is the car that brought us together. It's a shared hobby, and I'm just as likely to be working on it as he is.
I don't get complaints about spending money, time is a different matter. Any time not spent doing child care...
The idea is that the MGB will be her drive when she is not driving the mom-mobile.
My wife is a GEM. She never complains about buying cars or parts. She is always saying why not get rid of those extra motors and transmissions. My standard answer is , when I die feel free to do what you want. But I do watch my back:)))
So far she has fed my habit by getting me unbelievable gifts like air compressors and tools. She even reeled me in from my moment of weakness last week when I was talking about selling the project.
Not only is she great with the MG addiction, we just found out today at her latest ultrasound that we are going to be the proud parents of twin boys!
Come Thursday it's been like that 43 years here Joe, not even an arguement in all this time.
I have no problems - as long as I spend the same amount on her.
Actually Jo is good and I think it's partly because she knows the amount of stuff I left for sale and was ripped off on, when I left Australia to marry her.
Picture around $10,000 of radio equipment,
$5,000 of books (Technical and others).
$50,000 of race car (Open Wheeler Hillclimb car)
$800 of Pedigree dog.
The rip off comes from the fact that the "friend" I left this all with sold it, pocketed the money and denied ever having any of it. Last laugh tho - one buyer was a policeman and when I listed the S/Numbers for the radio equipement he realised that thenone he had bough was listed and promptly arrested the guy for stolen property.
Mine is great generally, but she can't understand why I bought a derelict B and am toiling on it every chance I get to strip it down. What is irrational about slaving over a junker when you already have one just like it anyway?
Jerri never gives me any grief over my MG's.....heck, Wednesday is our 37th anniversary & we're spending the day driving to Joe Reed's to pick up the '79 I'm buying from him...
...of course, my prime directive for a happy marriage if you're a car nut is: "She can't say 'no' to you if you never say 'no' to her!"
I feed my addiction with GEM Ent money so she cannot say anything about using household funds. Every once in a while, I'll use GEM funds to buy her something sparkley and colorful, you know like a stawberry pop or something just to prove I still love her
Welllll....... Since Mary bought the '74 and only her name is on the title, she doesn't complain when I spend my money on it - so I don't complain when she spends her money on house "stuff" (you know, drapes, paint, lamps - that stuff).
In October we will have been married five years - and my record is six, so she has to behave! ;)
My wife only gives me grief about spending so much time in the garage.
Not mine !!
She is the reason that we bouhgt our 1980 MGB LE in 2001 and this year we got a 77
with od and wire wheels in blue..
Karen has been out in the garage side by side helping with the cars..
..
Mary: "What did you buy now?"
Paul: "Why, something for the '71 of course." (her car)
So far, so good.
Paul
I told my wife about the Midget that Mike Joy has posted for sale in the Trader section. Without hesitation, she said "get it if you want it". Probably because she knows I won't! :D
Well Ed,
Wish you lived a lot closer. Been too many years since I had the pleasure of a Jag teardown, and a 63 one at that. Same year I started my apprentership at a Jag/Rover/Triumph dealership, back in the UK.
Best of luck
Cheers Ric
Steve S.. Your wife got any single girlfriends with similar interests? Pllleeeeaaaase respond :D
My wife has a horse. Her one horse cost more to buy, outfit, and take care of than both my MGBs combined, so she never says a peep!
Yeah, her $500 oil changes on her $23K car every 5k miles are okay - just don't spend anything on that d@M MG (that I bought for $6500 twenty-five years ago)...

I'm not telling! I gotta keep them secret in case I do drive my wife off with too much car stuff. :P
Nui hasn't complained as the time and price have skyrocketed on the resto. She just says, "just get it done".
Although she said when it is done if it still has a lot of problems she's going to take a hammer to it.
Hmmm.
Uh sometimes.
The reason that I have an MG again has to do with the walk, our new puppy at the time, took us on in June of 04. We walked a new route and there it was. Brenda said if I really want it get it. Since then, my obsession has worsened, and she complains once in a while but she also knows how much I enjoy this hobby. She loves her Vanagon Westy and at the end of the week will have that back with a brand new 2L 135hp conversion engine and other new goodies.
From reading all the posts, I like Tony's philosophy best. After all, he has the most MG's. LOL

Boy did you pick the wrong hobby. Better hide all the hammers! LOL!
My wife is generally pretty good, but she did spit the dummy out when I went out for an exhaust for the MGB, and came home with an MGC GT for restoration:)
My wife is a real trooper....I purchased my B on ebay, before I even told her. Actually she was the last to know and to top that it was delivered on Mothers Day! I felt like crap, but she just laughed it off and ask how much gas it would use? She wants a new Toyota Avalon.....think it's time for a visit to the Toyota dealership! Man I love that woman! 23 years and counting....
My wife insisted on buying the MGA! I was glad to accomodate.

Bill, the Toyotas are great cars, but I couldn't help but laugh out loud at a Motor Trend article title I saw I saw in the Dr's office the other day: "The Avalon, GM's best Buick Ever!"
No current wife - but my lawyer keeps calling wanting me to get married again as he has another kid to put through college. I told him I can't do it as I am still paying the local retoration shops owners kids tuition.

Mine doesn't complain because I fix everything on her Chevy for FREE! If I service or fix her car first, instead of working on the MG, I get to do as I please. I also would rather me do it than "Joe Bob" at Jiffy Lube. She's driven home to many times with something wrong after they work on it! I tell her I spend soo much time in the garage to keep my skills sharp. That way when something breaks on her car, I can fix it! Can't say that if I'm on the couch, or at my computer, drinkin' beer all the time. :)
I can''t complain, my wife bought our first MG as an anniversary gift. Still on the honeymoon after 27 yrs.
She has never even raised an eye brow when it comes to the MG. She says all of the expenses associated with the car are worth it since it gets the wrinkles out of my forehead.
Then again she did take over the living room with all her quilting stuff.

Yeah, my wife is on my butt right now, she wants to make sure that I have the GT seviced and checked over for this weekend's overnight trip with the car club :)
The ONLY time I got grief was when I didn't get to the dish washer in time.
I had put all the plastic engine parts from two motors in the dish washer.
And what ever else I thought needed cleaning.
Figured, "shoot, it gets the grease off the dishes".
She was always happy to see me happy.
No, never, not ever.
Well, except for the time I used her birthday money to buy a TR3 to get the tires for my MG-TD.
I did give her a ride in the TD.
