What a blast. Got to take a 73 Midget out for spin. Unlike anything I have ever driven before. I couldn't help feeling a little closter phobic. And I don't think I'd have it in me to drive one on a major highway. But for driving around town it seems like the perfect car. Thanks again 200mph. David.

Once you get used to the feeling of being a bumblebee in a buffalo stampede, then it's not a problem taking a Midget on the Interstate. The car can handle it.
After driving thru Atlanta at 3:00 PM-4:00 PM in a Midget, you can get used to anything, especially after you grow that second set of eyes.
I really should drive a B first before I decide. There are several B's for sale in my area. I may like one better then the Midget. Fact is I am used to driving larger cars (bmw's and saab's mainly). I really need to drive several examples of each. But my knowlege of the little car shot up a thousand fold today. It was fun!
Now imagine driving a 1275 Midget that is putting out near twice the stock HP. Back a few years ago, bfore the Jap cars got so crazy with HP, I use to love to set next to them at a red light. Now a days I want even run pichup trucks from red light to red light. My son has a Subaru that's putting out damn near 400HP out of a 4 banger. I drove it and that thing will absolutly cook the road.

What speed can the Midget cruise along at? 60mpg? 65mpg? For how long? Do you let the car cool down after a period of time? Most of the cars and trucks on the highway today (including my bmw) where doing 70-75mpg. Even a "wide load" truck with a house(!) on its trailer was doing close to 80mph!!
A stock 1275 can cruse at 70 al day long. You'll be turning 4500 RPM, but the motor is more than up to it. If everything is up to snuff inside that is.
They'll handle the interstate. I ran one from Chattanooga to Memphis (350 miles) in under 4.5 hours - with 2 stops for fuel! I was a lot younger then, though....
So was the oil consumption running flat out for that long! :D
a basic Sprite? Ah! to Live and Die on Hwy 17. Well, 40 years ago it moved. Maybe not today.
I have a 93 "Classic" SAAB 900 (or 900S, the question is still open). It takes as much or more f-ing with as the B--actually, lots more!
I think of it as an MGB Sedan, as it would have been 20 years later. My B is 1973.
After putting a Datsun 5-speed in the B, even the engine speed at highway speed is similar.
A Midget/Sprite? You gotta be a short person. Not 6-ft+ (unless you be "rubberman") If you wanna be ultimate cool BMC "A" series then find a Bugeye and update the sheeeit out of it (1275, 5-speed, supercharged, IRS, disc brakes, etc). get it to about 100 hp.
There might even be some panache for a Sprite MKII (Bugeye powertrain, later body, but still no rollup windows).
I'll have to up you,Joe. Newberry,SC to Memphis 4 stops for gas. Oh yea it was Jan. of 84. I drove through a snow storm from Atlanta to Chattanooga. Trust me that was hair raising. Your setting sooooo low to the ground everybody spits stuff on your windshield. I had to stop to scrap the snow off. When I stopped in Atlanta for gas and a pair of Jersey cotton gloves. I asked the attendant how the roads where. He laught and told me to find a room.

I learned to drive on Saabs. My father was a Saab nut. He had 4 or 5 of them over the years. They are special cars. But when the got taken over by GM the quality went down. He switched to BMW's. Now he is a BMW nut.
He says the best car he ever had was a Rover P6. But I don't think he is so crazy about me driving MG.
In responce to your PM. Here's a pic of the Midget engine.
When was that Joe? I remember back some time in the late 80 we had 6 below temps here in Memphis. I had to use 24 volts to get my Midget to turn over. I put a piece of cardboard over the grill to block all air going through it and the Midget still didn't get up to op temp on the drive to the shop. Needless to say I put some 10W/30 oil in her.
