Hello folks:

I have a '70 "B" and am rebuilding the engine....the Engine plate says it is an 18G....however, it has five mains. I believe that the 18G was a three main.

Are there any casting numbers that would definately tell what this engine is?

Engine plate was installed with drive screws, but there seems to be a problem with the numbers in the plate.

Any discussion would be appreciated...Thanks

Dennis

Dennis - 18G and 18GA engines are three main, 18GB through 18V engines are all five main.

As to the engine plate - hard to say. They are easily removable, and it is possible to change them around. If it even looks suspicious, I wouldn't trust it. Look for casting numbers and the "date clock" to verify the block.

Thanks....I do see that the head "Clock" indicates "71"....which I am assuming indicates it was cast in "71".

Car door plate and VIN indicates it was born in Feb. 70....but it was originally titled as a '71. SInce I had to get a Bonded title on this car because original title was lost, it is now titled as a "70".

The block date clock is just above the oil pan on the passenger side, below and in front of the oil filter.
This brings up the thought; "Could you run a 5 main using only 3 mains?".
Edit: Naw, I guess not. The block castings would still be too close for comfort.

Engine number plate on mine was missing when I got it. Is there any other way at all to know it's pedigree?

You can get the pedigree of the original car checked. This will not tell you if the engine was changed.
