I'm planning on doing cooling system maintenance and upgrades this fall. My car has never overheated but does get warm during uphill summer outings. Can the early fan shroud be fitted to my 70 model? Seems like a good idea. Also am going to install a pusher auxillary fan with a simple on off switch. I am going to install a recovery tank and wonder where to install the lower line on the radiator. Anyone done this? Remember, not just an overflow, but a true recovery set up.
Another issue has me concerned a bit. Lately my temp gauge takes forever to get anywhere near the middle mark where it normally hangs out except for summertime uphill runs. Its like its running too cool! Perhaps I need to install a new 180 degree thermo. I'm going to cut a piece of cardboard to cover part of the radiator next time I drive the car and I figure I'll know for sure then. BTW, cleaning and replacing bulbs, fuses and fuse block has helped brighten my dash lights and removing the gauges was not nearly as hard as I feared after reading some posts on this forum. Makes a difference, for sure.

West I sent you an e mail with pictures of a 70 GT. I tried to use the early fan shroud to a 76 a couple of years ago, and it needed to be trimmed, and I wasn't able to get it to fit. So I wasn't able to use it after all. I found the front forwarding of the radiator to be the simple way to do what I wanted.

It sounds like the fan shroud shoul dbe your last resprt. Install a new T-stat and have your radiator rebuilt. Make sure your cooling fan is installed properly (cupped side facing engine) and make sur ethe belt isn't slipping. Then check your ignition timing. A worn distirbutor will not give enough advance at 3000 rpms (32-36 degres plus vacuum advance), causing the engine to run warmer than normal at those speeds, yet normal at idle.
fan shrouds are a pain in the a--. Just install the pusher fan and see how it changes :drinking:
A fan shroud is a good idea, MGs (fan close to the radiator) idea was good but not great. At idle the air just blow around the radiator not directly on the core, causing the engine temperature to rise. On my 78 I have a fan shroud w/fixed fan, but the 78's engine bay has more room for it. Like Jeff said make sure your cooling system is tuned up first! flush, no leaks, etc.... Peter's suggestion on a electric fan is more modern and more efficient.
You get better air flow through the radiator when you have puller as opposed to pusher fans. Shrouds do make the air flow better.

Hi Ken,
If you destroyed the shroud, return it to me and I'll give you a partial credit for other stuff.
Here's an email I received just a few days ago:
fyi the shroud will fit (and the car will benefit) all models years until the electric fans were introduced. i have one on each of my 76 and my 68 and it made a HUGE difference here in southern california where 100F+ days with prolonged periods idling in heavy trraffic proved quite the challenge for my little british car.

I don't own a later MGB--yet.

Robert,,
What is the diameter of the hole in your shroud? I am pulling the OE electrics off my '80 and am looking at other electric puller configurations.

Larry,
Just over 13 inches. I've never heard of anyone retrofitting a fan on a late B. Interesting.
Cheers,
Robert
