I bought some new fender bead for my front fenders, but I've been looking at the rear fender bead and I'm pondering cutting it out and welding the seam. When I stripped the car, the paint was begining to lift at the rear bead seam in several places. I don't want to spend all this time on the car and have this happen again. I've searched and can't seem to find any pictures. Has anyone done this? Do you have any pictures and did you remove the bead at the rear of the front fenders also? I'm thinking that if the bead is removed on the front fenders, the seam at the rear below the windshield frame will not look right due to the gap.

Rick, I agree, the seam won't look right. I plan on replacing the bead on the GT during some major bodywork. The plan is grind it smooth then cut a groove with a Dremel tool and glue the bead back in.
On the front fenders the bead is easy to replace as it is just spot welded to the flange on the fender that butts up to the scuttle - the bead is shaped like a T.
shows how unknowing I am....I thought bead was used to fit between the bolted parts to reduce chaffing and whatnot.
I think the bead was in the seam on the rear fenders to reduce the amount of work during the assembly of the cars. With the bead, the seams did not have to be leaded and smoothed, but just a guess.
I removed the bead on my gt v8 project. I just ground the bead off with my angle grinder. Then I put a thin cut off disc on the grinder and cleaned down into the seam as much as I could. After that I welded the seam up one spot weld at a time. One issue is that there is a leaded seam in that area that will be affected by the heat of welding. I agree that the front fender beading needs to stay, but I like the smooth lood in the rear with it removed.
Tony Barnhill posted some pictures for me over on the BCF - I like the look. I think I'm gonna do it.
I removed the bead (front and rear) on my GT V8. The body shop that did my paint filled the seams with a flexible filler like they use on modern cars. The paint has stuck to it perfectly - and about ten years have passed.

OK, I don't get it. Why do so many of you guys want to eliminate the fender beads? If you want a !@#$%^&* Miata then buy a !@#$%^&* Miata! I'm a purist that thinks our MGB's should not have irreversable modifications done to them. These cars may be plentiful right now but they won't always be that way. Especially with so many people modifying them irreversably to suit their modern taste. These cars deserve to be kept in "original condition" for future generations to carry on the mark. Please keep your mods minor and reversable so these wonderful cars can pass on to future generations with some simbalance of originality. Don't be a DPO!!! Another glass of Shiraz and I'll be fine. Breath deeply, breath deeply...

Dude, didn't you just post on another thread that you're about to start building a LHD RV8?
I want to eliminate the beads because It's my car, I'm spending the crapload of money on it to get it like I want it and I really dont give a crap about originallity or what other folks are going to think or say. If I wanted a Miata I could have bought one for far less than I'll have in my B, but I didn't want a Miata, I wanted an MG. I suppose you also go to the rodder forums and bash all the folks that are taking the older classics like a '34 ford and customizing them like they want them? OH MY, He put a Chevy Engine in a Ford? What about the originality? Who gives a sh*t. I enjoy looking at nicely reworked classics that have tasteful mods that make the car unique and I don't think it takes away from the "Marque". In my opinion I rescued the car from a DPO that spent more time rigging stuff than it would have taken to fix it right and it probably would have ended up in a crusher.
OK, I feel better now.
Hey Rick, why don't you chill out? It seems like folks like you think folks like me are completely wrong for advocating originality. These are CLASSIC British sports cars and they will always have a loyal following as long as enough of them aren't completely bastardized to suite the modern owner's tastes (like yours apparently). You can ruin your car, as so many others have done, (and will do) and it probably won't do any more harm than make the original cars (like mine) worth more. I still have to stand up for the cause though! I don't give a crap what the early Ford guys do with their cars because I'm not into them. I am, however, into these MGB's and think they deserve better than what people like you give them. You should consider the fact that maybe your wrong in your thinking and I'm not instead of the other way around. Have a nice day!

Very well said, Rick. Isn't it ironic that purists use the word "original" while criticizing the very people who show the most originality?
Anyway... Shawn evidently missed one of the points I made in the post immediately above his. Eliminating those ugly fender beads doesn't have to be an irreversable modification. I prefer flexible filler over welding up the joints because the fenders can then be easily removed/replaced if they ever have to be.
Well....well.....sounds like personal taste is alive and well. Glad to hear it.....I thought maybe the high gas prices are getting our panties in a knot over here for a minute.
Yea geez.. it isnt like I'm going to graft tail fins from a '59 Caddy onto the back. All I want to do is clean up the lines and smooth the body a bit. At some point in the past when the car was re-painted the tops of the beads were sanded so they are uneven and don't look right. I think the bead takes away from the lines anyway. Here are some pictures of a roadster Tony Barnhill is working on that he has removed the beads, and smoothed out the ridge down the side of the fenders and doors and welded up the seam under the tail lights- Looks really good to me - Tony I hope you don't mind me posting your pictures.
If they had done what they wanted, would the designers of the MGB put the bead in the rear fenders? Impossible to tell, however, when I look at an RV8 at places like http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?mgrevrv8f.htm I see no rear fender beading.
Beading is usually a production expediency added to finish an joint because it was impossible (very little is impossible) or deemed too costly to finish it with a filler material. A good case in point is the early spitfires used clamshells, later ones were able to close the clamsheels by revising tooling.
I've noticed there is a degree of double standard by some members of this board regarding originality. Those who chose to modify cars they own are chastised by some of those who proclaim we are caretakers only, but some of these same people speak of modifying their own cars.
If you believe the cars should be kept original, that's fine. But be honest, run bias ply tires, pillow dashes if they were installed, and some crappy old am radio. Once you have made one modification (not maintainence items), you become a hypocrite.
Shawn-
weren't you the one who chewed me another a**hole for claiming that half the readers modify their cars? Then assumed my response (which i chose to delete) was so vile it was deleted by the moderator, then once again tried to engage me on the same thread saying it takes two to tango? By golly, it WAS you
You're spoiling for a fight, and take every opportunity to initiate one.
Curt and Rick- ignore this clown. He's not worth the effort it takes to type a response
edited for spelling
Those who know me know what an originality nut that I am. I run bias-ply Dunlops, but have a someone decent early sixties Blaupunkt AM,FM,Shortwave in my car. I like keeping my car that way, and that is how I enjoy the hobby. That being said, I do not care what someone does to THEIR car. I have seen cars that are far from original and very well done. I can appreciate the time and talent that it takes to do that. I imagine that people who have the much maligned "trailer queens" are doing to their cars what makes them happy. If that is how they enjoy the hobby, so be it. One person on the BCF referred to purists as scum. What gives with that? That to me seems snobby as hell and just a different manifestion of unbrideled pride that purists are labeled with. Anyway, my point is, it is your car and do to it and enjoy as you see fit. That is what I am doing, and enjoying myself at the same time.
Hi Greg. Nice to hear from you again. You're such a plesant fellow! Yeah I ripped you a new one in that last exchange between us because you deserved it then and now you deserve another one. So now I'm a "clown" huh? It seems that you have no problem with other people's opinions as long as they agree with yours. This is a FORUM my hot-headed friend. This is a place where people go to express their opinions, raise objections, ask questions, show off their toys, and so on and so forth. When I post a topic or respond to one I'm trying to generate feedback on the issue at hand. I've posted a lot of opinions on this site and I've never had anyone attack me the way you did and continue to do. Most people respond or post their opinion without getting hostile. I'm sure most just choose to stay out of the fight. I consider myself to be a mild-mannered, intelligent, and easy to get along with person and, by the way, I have many friends. I'm not advocating that our MGB's need to stay 100% original. What I'm advocating is that the mods be limited to things that are not hard (or impossible) to restore back to original by future owners. Hell, my car has lots of mods done to it (and lots of others I've seen do to) but they are all bolt on and easily changed back to original. Over the years these cars will become more valuble and less common so, if we love them, it seems like the responsible thing to do is preserve them as best we can for future enthusiast. I'll be waiting for you next nastygram...
Shawn Escue
I have no issue with people keeping their cars original. I do have issue with people who break into the middle of a thread and spread poison. If you had pleasantly suggested that the cars be left original, I would have remained silent... I do not consider “If you want a !@#$%^&* Miata then buy a !@#$%^&* Miata!” to be either mild mannered, or intelligent. I consider it to be belligerent and hostile. And I do consider the kick sand in the face of someone and then telling them to chill out as the actions of a clown. I do continue to believe you are looking for a fight, and I do recommend that anyone you attack as you diid to ignore you. As I shall from this point forward.
Greg, you're a !@#$%^& moron! As I said I'd be expecting a nastygram from you and sure enough I got one. If you were a man you would have apoligized. I guess your just a tough guy. You probably eat nails for breakfast and drink gasoline for tea. What a jerk you are. What the hell's wrong with you? You're the one looking for a fight obviously. Just because I express myself in a certain way doesn't mean you have to take it personally. What are you, 4 years old? I've never seen anything like this. Hey Skye, can you ban people for being total jerks? I bet you wind up in prison Greg you are such a total ass!
Shawn Escue
Hey Rick. You're the guy who egged this one on so deal with it. You were very hostile in your response too. Can't we all just get along? There are ways to respond without being hostile. Why am I having to do this??? I just want to drink wine, make love to my wife, and restore my MGB!
Shawn Escue
Rick most of this was your fault. Deal with it. Your response was very hostile too. Are you related to Greg?
Shawn Escue
ok....I spent about 30 mins typing out my response. I decided not to post it and contribute to this, so I deleted it, You aint worth it Shawn. I wish I could delete this thread and be done with it. Could this thread please be locked?
