Hello I just bought my 78 MGB yesterday. I got a chance to change the oil, lightly sand the ignition rotor, and add fresh gas. Anyhow my questions are.....

1) Does all 77-80 Bs have a one speed blower?

2) Can I turn on the map light without opening the door? (could on my Midget)

3) How do I turn on the face vents? Close heater plate? (Sorry midget had no face vents...:)

4) The coolant temp gauge sensor looks small can I replace it with a aftermarket Gauge in the future? (have not troubleshooted yet) Gauge needle stays a C.

5) Weber maintenance I have the electric choke model. Engine runs great but P.O. didn't drive her much. What is the best way to clean the Weber? or leave good enough alone? ( Very good with HS2 SUs but clueless to Weber carburetors)

Thanks,

James

1) Does all 77-80 Bs have a one speed blower? Nope they are 2 speed

2) Can I turn on the map light without opening the door? Answer: Yep -- push on it

3) How do I turn on the face vents? Close heater plate? Answer: Face vents close by rolling the rollers. Heater vent by turning the heater vent knob to close

4) The coolant temp gauge sensor looks small can I replace it with a aftermarket Gauge in the future? Answer: Should be the same size as the fuel gauge which looks good to me

5) Weber maintenance, I have a electric choke model engine runs great but P.O. didn't drive her much. What is the best way to clean the Weber? or leave good enough alone? Answer: Leave good enought alone -- Webers are Great and once set they stay that way

Just my two cents :)

I don't know if its true or not.. but the guy I work with said to use Lucas fuel treatment. He said it will help clean out the carb....

He used to work on english cars in a garage in his youth, and said his boss used it regularly in his austin healey...

James,

1) two speed blower,
2)yes the light is like a large rocker switch, just rotate fore and aft,
3)dash vents require forward movement of the car to produce flow.
heater/defrost is by rotating the knob on the centre lower console, the blower produces flow.
Fresh air for the footwells is enabled by the white tipped lever under the dash next to your right knee and also requires forward movement of the vehicle to produce flow.

Not sure about 4 & 5

Close the vent slats. They only receive air flow through the fresh air vent intake located on the center of the hood just forward of the windshield. there is a lever above the driver's right knee that opens and shuts that damper, or you can buy a magnetic cover for the vent intake opening on the hood.

Check to make sure the temperature probe electrical connectionis making good contact. Its on the passenger's side of the engine above the alternator. One wire only.

I had a Weber 32/36 on my '80 but migrated to SU HS4's. Clean the Weber with carb cleaner and a tooth brush for surface deposits, and run a can of Sea Foam through with a full tank of gas. Really, if its working well, don't mess with it...there are ususally plenty of other systems not running well to fiddle with.

Ha HA... it was dark outside and didn't notice the vent when closed...:) likely why I was not getting and air out of them.

Like Jay said: If the Weber is working good it will continue to do so, don't mess with it. Minor clean-up like he mentioned is OK.

As a fellow 78 B owner, welcome.

All of your questions have been answered.

As a comment about question 2, I must admit that the way the light worked impressed me. Somewhere an unknown engineer designed what I consider to be the very best way to turn on a light in a car that I have ever seen. It is elegant and simple and once you use it, you wonder why every other car manufacture does not have a similar design.
