I had visions of having to rebuild the entire engine. I met with a British car mechanic today and after about half an hour he noticed that the fan was wobbling slightly while running. I shut the car off and wiggled the fan forward and back and it had quite a bit of slop. So as it turns out, I must have dammaged the crush collar on the new water pump when I pressed the fan clutch on. Subsequently it loosened over time and allowed the clutch and fan assembly to make this clunking noise. Needless to say I was very relieved to know it was going to be a relatively minor fix. He suggested I ditch the water pump fan assembly and get an electic unit to do the work. Overall it's been a very informative and productive day despite our first snow fall of the season.

john twist has that video on "stitching" the clutch, fan, and pump together w/a coupla hose clamps. don't know if this will help, but there was a post recently; something like "fix fan for $1 or $200.

I know you were happy to hear that!

Now if you want to, you can get a new water pump, clutchless fan & all the hardware for the price of a clutch alone. They're parts for a '74 Spitfire...I did it & I'm very pleased with the result!

I did see this video and thought that it would be the perfect fix in this situation but because the crush collar is damaged I think the hose clamps would just push the whole clutch assembly off the front of the water pump. Knowing that these clutches don't servive very long, I think I'm going to go with the electric fan with a thermostatic switch.

Talk to folk who have done electric fan alone. It is a VERY tight fit behind the rad and it is much less efficient in front.

Best suggestion is to go with the clutchless setup as mentioned by Dave.

Michael, thanks for that bit of info. I just purchased a fan but haven't tried to install yet. Least expensive of the 2 solutions.
