Au Clair de la Lunewas the first song ever recorded. This youtube spot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Gi6j4w3DYplays it back with a bit of written explanation.

This version (1964), 106 year later http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqVPKfcfbL4&list=FL8cC9gk_MBf5NNyUxOZS15A&index=1&feature=plpp_video covers it with a more modern appeal.

It has an interesting English translation considering it was penned at least as far back as the mid 18th century:

English Translation:

In the light of the moon, Pierrot, my friend
Loan me your pen to write something down
My candle's dead, I've got no flame to light it
Open your door, for the love of God!

In the light of the moon, Pierrot replied
I don't have a pen, I'm in bed
Go to the neighbor's, I think she's there
Because someone just lit a match in the kitchen

In the light of the moon, likable Harlequin
Knocked on the brunette's door, and she responded immediately
Who's knocking like that? And he replied
Open your door, for the God of Love!

In the light of the moon, you can barely see anything
Someone looked for a pen, someone looked for a flame
In all of that looking, I don't know what was found
But I do know that those two shut the door behind them.

I love the first comment under the video:

"I remember listening to it 150 years back on my iStone"
