Thanks for all the comments on this strange-to-me problem!
I chose the easiest route to start with and replaced the rubber pads at the u-bolts on the left rear axle and changed out the pivot bolt in the springs at the same time. Amazingly, the problem was cured, no funny steering on acceleration or backing off the gas at all! I would replace the u-bolts and nuts while you've got it this far down...
I guess the next big project is replacing that worn gearshift knob.

the best shift knobs in the known universe are from Grommit on this board! He turns them of exotic woods, to your choice of shapes, with a metal threaded insert. for the price of a crappy Chinese imitation.
