When I bought this car last spring I knew about some of the halfassed repair jobs that were done prior. It didn't cost me a lot of money and has been reliable so far and has been fun for both of us.
I knew that the floors were replaced with sheets of metal instead of proper floor panels and that didn't bother me.. But after lifting the carpets I am stunned at the craftsmanship that was used.
The floors are 1/8" metal and he used three different pieces on the passenger side... Bolted to the floor underneath... not welded... bolted. They were pretty ugly and lots of surface rust but solid as a rock:

There are three holes in the sills one on the passenger side and two on the drivers side that will need to be welded up, but the rest of it will have to suffice until I get the GT done sometime, and find the cash and time to do the same on this one. So.. I don't suppose I will be a DPO by cleaning this up and POR 15 ening it? I promise if I sell it in the future, as sits.. I will share the word that I didn't do the work.

Besides.. The sound deadener and carpet will hide it all anyway.. Right? :D

Well... between my Wife and I we have lost a total of 79lbs since last driving season... with no problems... So... I think we are ahead of the game. :)
If it is safe. If it works for you. Good enough!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy you car how you want to and yes it does clean things up a great deal.
There are very few cars that are up to new spec in every area.
There are the odd ones that have better than new door gapes and paint that is beyond anything that came from the factory. If the factory had built these perfect cars they would have shut down so much sooner.
The MGB was a low priced sports car. Much of the factory craftsmanship was of poor quality. Welds that look like a zit faced 14 year old DPO with his first buzz box did. The 6 cars that I have owned all had some of this welding.
When I was a kid the joke doing the rounds was that they were made by a bunch of drunks that lived under a bridge.
Hi Paul. Love following your progress on your cars. Can you tell me about the paint you are using? For the red, is it colour matched, rattlecan etc etc. For the black on the floor, what have you been using?
Thanks, Stu
Cheers

Funny you should ask Stu. (where were you on Sunday by the way?) I am using a Dupli-ColoUr rattle can spray. I used a Toyota coloUr in the trunk, "Regatta Red", when I put the new floor in it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/KLUTZP/71%20MGB/f510e161.jpg
Which was a touch on the reddish shade from the orangy coloUr of the car, but it was the closest I could find. I used the same can for what I did yesterday. I figure it will be covered up anyway so a little bit off won't matter. So, I sent Mary out to get me two more cans at Canadian Tire. She came back with the proper cans but when I tried to use the first one.. IT WAS WHITE!! Damn kids. So, I get the other one... Aim... WHITE AGAIN!!!!!
Andrew then "offers" (just got his license last week) to go and exchange them. He comes back and said they were out but brought back something he thought was close. Well.. this is almost the exact match. Mazda Sunrise Red.
I will get some pictures in a while but it looks like it belongs.
When are you getting the Autoist car?
Paul

Your wife's going to be so skinny, you're gonna have to shake the sheets to find her. ;)

You mean I have been shaking the wrong thing? :(
Hey Paul, had to work Sunday. Sure wanted to be there. Work seems to come in waves, so when it comes, ya gotta respond. My son Mark and I are picking up the car late in May. Been looking at routes home and thinking about how much to push the car. Anything could break on the car at anytime, so I think the slow road is the best option. So we'll just let the car and the road tell us how hard to push and see how we make out. Part of the adventure I guess, but really looking forward to the experience. Also looking forward to seeing the Garagemahall and the collection of cars. Tony's back soon from one of his army responsibilites, so final details soon.
That's interesting about the paint colours. I plan on painting the car a different colour than blue (perhaps Carmine Red???) and want to do the engine bay, cockpit and trunk myself. The NAPA store near us has just done a big expansion and now include a paint section where they can mix any colour in rattlecan for $25/can. Thought I'd buy a can and test my abilities and colour correctness on a scrap of sheet metal. I would think it should work out OK.
Best of luck with your B's. they're looking good. I can't believe what the dpo did the side areas for speakers. I do like the observations from some of the guys though to not worry about it, fix it up the way you want and just get in and enjoy it.
Cheers,
Stu
Hey Paul. I'm putting POR-15 on my floor pans, sills, etc. this weekend. Whew, what a lot of work! I figure that I've got at least 80 hours in grinding, stripping, sanding, marine cleaning, metal readying, and painting. All my sheet metal is original with only the floorboards having some minor rust pits on them 'm betting it'll all be worth it though in the end. I'm thinking that I won't paint over the POR 15 with body color paint like you did because it will all be hidden beneath the carpet and panels anyway. Lots of fun isn't it?
Shawn Escue
Shawn,
I am not going to paint over the POR 15. I didn't POR the parts that I am painting, I just used a couple coats of primer and the ColoUr-Tone spray paint.
Same reason.. they won't be seen.
Paul

Has that been working successfully for you? :D
I had wondered why the floor pans looked flat in a previous picture you had on. What ever works.. it will be covered up anyways.
